Need current info / status on EFIKA / MorphOS
« on: January 12, 2007, 12:47:34 AM »
Hi, can anyone in the know tell me:

(1) Is the 'official' release of MorphOS that runs on EFIKA made public? I think they were talking about release 1.5 supporting EFIKA. Does 1.4.x release runs on EFIKA too?

(2) Where can I find a definitive guide to hardware compatibility for EFIKA/MorphOS setup? I'm thinking of graphics cards, HDDs.

(3) Where can I buy EFIKA boards?

(4) Is there any reputable establishment (cough, talking about hardware sellers here) where one can buy the whole system e.g. EFIKA board + GPU + HDD + case, possibly with MorphOS pre-installed?

(5) What options are there in terms of graphics cards with only a PCI slot available?

(6) Is there any way to increase RAM? I don't know what the MorphOS footprint is, but 128MB looks rather low-end to me. But again, that's a lot for Amiga  :-D

(7) What's your opinion on EFIKA vs other 'options'?

 :-?

1. Not available yet.

2. Anything should work. Look at a Pegasos guide for specifics.

3. http://www.pegasosppc.com

4. Not yet. I think Vesalia sells partial bundles (board, disk, graphics card).

5. The board comes with an AGP adaptor. The Radeon 9250 that shipped with Pegasos ODWs has been seen using that slot successfully.

6. No way to increase the RAM is yet known. There are pins for 2 more RAM chips on the underside of the board, but there's probably a bit more to do than just soldering them in place.

7. The inability to easily add any kind of internal CD drive is a point against it, but the Efika will probably be the cheapest of the Amiga-like PPC options.

Thanks for the informative replies.

Isn't it possible to connect both HD drive and CD drive on the same IDE cable?

I think I will hold on until MorphOS 1.5 is officially released.

Unless there's something seriously weird about the IDE interface on the board, it shouldn't be any more difficult than adding a CDROM to an A1200.

EDIT: And incidently, there are no cases for Efika currently marketed, as it's a non-standard layout. You have to make your own.

A4000D, A3640 OC-36.3MHz, custom tower, Mediator A4000D. Diamond Banshee 16M, Indivision AGA 4000, GVP HC+8.

Mac Mini 1.5GHz, that might run MorphOS someday, when the fools who own it come to the realization that 30 minutes just isn\'t enough time to play with it enough to decide whether or not you like it enough to cough up $200.

 - Someone please design SOME kind of DIY accelerator for the A4000. :D -

you could always put it in an old commodore case with the commodore keyboard converter(converts c64 keyboard for use with pc). That would really be unusual.  :-o
