WinXP Assign?

My daughter's WinXP pc has two hard drives. One (C:)for the system (as far as possible) and a larger one (D:) for her own stuff. She downloads music files, which insist on going to C: rather than on D: where it's preferred. Drive C: is getting full, which slows things down. I think she then transfers the files to D: and from there to her iPod. When she starts this transfer, the iPod software automatically looks in C:\My Music (I think it is) so each time she has to type in or search for the proper path to the music files on D:

Anyway, my question is can you somehow tell the loader where to go directly without all the faffing around? Something like an assign. Sorry if this is basic stuff but I never got the hang of WinXP.

you can try SyncToy from Microsoft or robocopy to automatically move the files from one location to another...

I'm not sure this is possible from the XP GUI, but I know you can do it from DOS:

C:\> subst D: C:\her\stuff

You need to re-assign this one for every boot, so you can add it to the startup folder or something.

Suggestion #2 (and probably the easiest one): Enable windows file sharing, share her directory (or "folder" as it's called in the Windows world), map it as a drive (D:) on the same computer.  This drive will remap itself on every login.

I *think* TweakUI allows you to remap the raw locations of all those "convenience" folders, like My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, etc. That might be what you're looking for.

Yeah, the subst command can be used.
But the real problem is probably the software that JaXanim is using.
The music/recording program should remember where the file should be saved to (you can look in the programs registry to see the save directory path etc).

My documents are always loaded from my document folder in my D drive. My pirated music from a music folder on the D drive  etc...If i load from anywhere else the program will then remember that new path.

Yes TweakUI can do this.

Right click on My Documents
click on Properties
You will see a current file location box
Under that you will see a "move" tab
click that and change the location of My Documents to
you D Drive. You can create a new folder called My Documents in the subsequent folder list dialog box if needed.   :-D

I move the location of My Documents on all my Windows computers with secondary drives. Works nicely. When you click the My Documents icon on the desktop you automatically go to your D drive.

And you might want to change the default Program Files folder as well: just edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProgramFilesDir to e.g. D:\Program Files

Seriously, all you do is direct iTunes to the drive/folder you want the library stored in. This is done via iTunes preferences.

If you are using Firefox, just tell the download manager to put the files in whatever folder you want (example = D: downloads ). It's a snap, and this way you don't have to copy any files anywhere.
If you haven't upgraded to firefox 2.0, why not?
OR if you're doing this directly from iTunes, head to preferences to tell it where to put the files.....
