Have you made a profit with your Amiga?
« on: January 10, 2007, 02:56:47 AM »
Since there have been a lot of threads along the lines of "what games do you play?", "what kind of utilities do you use", etc. I was curious, does your Amiga actually generate some profit or significant income for you? Did you earn more than what you invested in the equipment? Leaving aside obvious people like Jens  :-)  are you someone who programs software, or produces videos or artwork, and have been successful at it? Has there been anything that you have done on the equipment, gotten you some recognition beyond our little community?

I remember, quite a few years back, some guy had a scheme for putting Amigas running Scala (or some such program) in mall kiosks and generating income from the advertising.

I did quite a few renders, animations and presentations on the Amiga.
I got paid small amounts of money in some cases, but nowhere near what I spent on the hardware. In fact I would say the money I got didn't cover my raytracing software and graphics programs entirely.

Sadly my Ami's have not generated income in many many years. I used to do audio work in my Ami based microstudio. Today that is all done on a dual core AMD system. It's a crashy little speed demon that is no where near as stable as my Ami's were. But the newer tools and utilities make it worth the pain of XP. Just make sure to hit the save button any time you make changes.

It's actually amusing in a way. The main recording package I use now comes with automatic change and version control for rollbacks and crash recovery. Even they admit how bumpy windows is, and tried to compensate for it. (Did an ok job of it too) I miss Studio 16/Bars n pipes.

Yes. My Amiga generated profit (I currently do not own one), my current Pegasos 2 generates profit too, I hope my newest computer - an Efika, will generate some profit as well.

How does it do that? art? run a web business? desktop?

Hey Plaz, do you have any pictures of your AmiStudio? Can you upload them? You have little resemblance to John Denver.  ;-)

How does it do that?

For Amiga it was mainly design of peripherials (Prometheus namely). For Pegasos it was programming (MorphOS Team) and now scientific research.

My C64 and later my first A500 taught me enough to start as a computer professional in '90 - which is still feeding me today (of course I never stopped learning).

Sadly, the Amiga only briefly played an active role in my job, but it was where I discovered many basics I still use every day: programming/scripting, networking, client/server stuff, digital audio & video.

Very good point - it introduced a LOT of people to computer programming, many of whom went on to be computer professionals. So indirectly it made a lot of people money...
I like Amigas

I put an A500 in an arcade cabinet and made a few bucks when I sold it.

Parts < $300
Sold = $425, I think?

It was really good for Amiga arcade conversions that used the joystick with one button like Rodland and Bubble Bobble.

Amiga -> JAMMA is a really simple job btw.

I discovered IT with Amiga, back in late 80's, when 12-14 y/o.
Now I'm DB architect and works as free lance consultant.
I didn't made any money with my Amiga, but what I am today is, for the most, due to my Amiga(s).

I used to do a lot of Flyers and posters for Bands/Gigs,and get paid. Later on my Amiga imagine/lightwave work got me a job in the games industry, so that kind of counts.
