workbench startup problem
« on: January 06, 2007, 05:10:06 AM »
hey^^
I have a question for you guys.
I installed today a game on my amiga, and after that, even after system has been turned off, and turned back on, I'm not directed to the workbench, but to the game itself(probably after installation workbench wrote special startup for it, and I don't know how can I go directly to the system as usually before, and maybe delete all unnecessary game sequences from workbench(the only way I can enter workbench is from floppy disk, but I want to be able running it from the hard drive as usual).
and also if you could tell me what's the command to start workbench from shell, that'd be great.
cheers!

If you have kickstart >= 2, you can press both mouse buttons on boot and select boot with no startup sequence from early boot menu. Or, boot with floppy and edit s:startup-sequence and remove game related lines.
The command to start workbench is loadwb.

I actually tried that.
when I'm trying to type loadwb in bootmenu, message appears:please enter env into floppy drive.
when I'm booting from floppy then I'm going to the execute command window and typing
edit startup-sequence,
and the editor appears.
tried to type loadwb there, but didn't work, it says - invalid command.

You can keep cancelling the env: requesters or just "assign env: ram:" before "loadwb".

Also, try copying the original startup-sequence from your Workbench boot disk (not the install disk) to s: (backing up your old one, of course) and, so long as your user-startup was unchanged, you should be good to go.

If you had anything (such as VisualPrefs) installed in your old startup-sequence, they will be replaced, but they should be easy to recover if you tell us what's missing after you get back your booting.

EDIT:
To edit the startup-sequence, try typing "ed s:startup-sequence".  Edit is a 'line-editor', and I have personally never understood it... :-P

ok, thanks for the input.
so I deleted all commends from there(there were only game startup-sequence, maybe system startup has been overwritten?)
and all I get is to enter amiga dos, and nothing happens.
loadwb doesn't work, assign env:ram doesn't work either(it says invalid name of device),
anyone can tell me what's the usual startup commend for workbench from hard drive?
cheers!

yes, I typed it and it shows everything fine, except system doesn't do anything, so I typed loadwb in the next line, you can see the amiga is blinking for a second, and even though I didn't get env message, system stays there(amiga dos), doesn't boot my workbench as it used to.
so I'm still in amiga dos...

well the reason I'm hesitate to do that is because I wouldn't want to loose anything I had before, here's how the workbench looked like before startup-sequence dilemma.
anyone any other ideas?

You need your original startup-sequence to your boot partition/s drawer. And that loadwb command does still need endcli command to get out of that cli/shell. You loose nothing but something may not be working without your original startup-sequence.

copying only the s/startup-sequence file from an original workbench disk to your s/ directory on the hard drive will most likely enable you to boot up from your harddrive

type this in the dos-shell
Quote
copy df0:s/startup-sequence to dh0:s/

note: if this fails and you were bright enough to substitute the standard device names in that command
with the ones you use on your system
i fear that game might have corrupted your harddrive
you didn't by any chance install 'syndicate' did you?

ok I can't find startup-sequence on my wb3.0 disk, there is a workbench startup folder though.
should I delete my existing folder of workbench startup folder and drag this one from floppydisk?
I also checked my startup sequence file in my s drawer, there is also another startup sequence outside of the s drawer.
waiting for suggestions   ;-)

yeah smoorke, I copied the file from the disk and it worked!
though my system icon is different(I had the one with the checkered amiga ball and such, these are missing), I would like to install these again, anyone know from where?

no. deleting your old wbstartup/ folder will kill some tools you had installed.

just open the CLI
located in sys:system/ directory

and type the line i mentioned above

the reason you seem to have trouble locating the startup-sequence on you workbench floppydisk is something called icons
by default drawers are set to only display files wich have a matching '.info' file
you can toggle this feature by selecting show all files somewhere in the right click menu of those drawers. don't know off-hand the exact location tho.

yeah, I'm always switching to "show all files", everything works except I'm missing few icons I would like to update.
thanks again smoorke and others for all the input :-)
cheers!
