ADSL in Norway
« on: May 31, 2003, 08:49:09 PM »
My brother recently moved to Norway and now he's considering getting ADSL. From what I have found out Telenor is the only ADSL provider in Norway?

I would like to know what kind of network hardware Telenor supplies as standard. Is it USB junk or an ethernet modem? Is it possible to get an ADSL connection without a modem? I.e. to buy your own at the local computer shop.

And from what I've heard "Telenor is one of the worst DSL providers, they used to have monopoly, but they still suck!" Or something like that.

Nah, you also got nextgentel, which is the best choice at the moment, though they are not avaliable in every part, but you can get it if you dont live way out in the forest or something...

Its the best choice at the moment, they are cheaper than  telenor, better upload and more stable lines, you also get a router and are allowed to use the line as server... No download/upload limts either..

Telenor is the most expensive isp out there, you dont get a router, the maximum upload is only 256kbit, unstable.... And also it has download/upload limits unless you buy the most expensive line for 795nrk 1024/256kbit you get a 1024/512kbit for 548nkr at nextgentel..

You also got tele2, which is pretty cheap compared to telenor, but they rent telenors lines... so you still have only a maximum of 256kbit though no download/upload limits..

btw... all of them deliver ethernet modems, but with telenor i think you have to ask for one.

http://www.tele2.no/

Though sadly all isp providors is expensive here compared to other countries  :-x

Specially if he is planning on using it on a amiga or similar, then its very wise to stay away from telenor, since it uses VPN dialup... Which you need specialy software to use..

He should stay away from Telenor anyways  ;-)

Cable broadband is another solution... I think the pricing may be lower than adsl in some areas...

Tomas is right, he shold stay away from Telenor if he can.
They are the bad guys... :o)

I live in Oslo, but I have moved around a bit the last few years.
Based on my personal experiece I would try to go for a solution from 'BredbĂ„ndsfabrikken' if it is available. This is a 10Mbit broadband solution available in certain areas of Oslo.  If he has moved to Bergen, BKK is the way to go, and if he is living in Stavanger he should try to connect with Lyse Energi.
If this is not available he should go for NextGenTel as they provide a DSL-router in their solution, and is in general very Amiga-friendly.
They are also pretty much the only DSL-providers who are building 'their own network'. Most other providers are only reselling Telenor-cabling. NextGenTel also has some decent lines out of Norway, adding to their connection at the National Internet eXchange point.

The current ratings for the best providers in Norway made by one of the biggest IT-sites here is as follows:

1.  BredbĂ„ndsfabrikken
2. BKK
3. Lyse Energi
4. First Mile
5. NextGenTel

There are lots more depending on where in the country you look.

Feel free to email me for more info. (I used to work in the telecom-business)

Good luck anyway..... ;-)

Thanks a lot for the info so far guys.

He's using RedHat as his OS on a Linuxbox and is located in Grimstad (smallish town east of Kristiansand). Cable is not an option because they don't have a cable connection (iirc).

@unit21:

Do you mind if I relay your email addy to him if that's needed?

AFAIK Nextgentel is by far the best broadband provider in Grimstad. He could also check out bluecom which offers about the same services.

I'm living in Grimstad myself so I know at least a few of his options.

If he is in the center of the town then there _is_ a cable co that has cable hookup. They seemed a bit slack so I passed them up.

I don't know if TeleNor Avidi (the cable part of The Dark Empire) is active around here and if they have cable modem access. I wouldn't be suprised if they did.

When I was shopping around (2 years in September?) NextGenTel wasn't available here. I think that has changed. They probably have the best offer all in all. They sell static IP too if you cough up another 99(?)NOK each month.

Myself, I have TeleNor both for hookup and services. There was no download limit when I got it, so I'm in the clear there...
As for stability, I think I've only had trouble once in 20 months (well, after I got hooked up properly...)

I'm typing this on my Amiga routed through a Red Hat pc box that is my home router.
The ADSL modem is an Alcatel "Speed Touch Home". I have 384/128.

@unit21:

Ta :-).

@NyQuil:

WIll check bluecom out too.

@Northway:

They live at Bakken (the street, not the neighourhood) which is pretty much out of town. But even if there is cable there I don't think they'd take it. Or is it possible to have only a cablemodem subscription minus the TV crap?
-oh, and welcome to Amiga.org as a poster :-)-
