AWeb...IBrowse or Other! ...... Which is the best and why?
« on: December 28, 2006, 03:49:36 PM »
What amiga browser do you use?

What system do you run it on?

I have Ibrowse and AWeb on WinUAE and my Amiga A1200

They both work ok...Ibrowse has built in picture datatypes so it good for basic 3.1 installs

So Thumbs Up Ibrowse  but dont like having to register! etc

Is ther better free amiga browser with no cripplage?

Browsers should defacto be free (beertype)?

I like both, AWeb and IBrowse. Would be great to have Sputnik for 68k, though.

AWeb does the job for me (on A3000/060/CV64), but using any browser on the Amiga is a bit of a retro time-warp experience due to lack of support for modern standards.

If sites provide a "low graphics" or "mobile" version, that helps (such as the BBC News site).

I don't think any of them is specially good. But if must choice one, I pick IBrowse.

The most bad thing is that it take years before they release a new version

I know IB2.4, is just released. But I think it will take about 2 years from now to release 3.0. (I could have wrong).

ps. I want to start using my Amiga again and surf the web, but I refuse to use a browser that not even support CSS. (the most important thing).

I downloaded IB2.4 demo yesterday and tested it on WinUAE.

To be honest, I was very dissapointed...

- Still old Times fonts in IB... Websites looks terrible with this kind of font :(
- Seems like I can`t zoom page in/out... [as in any browser]
- Flash plugin is very buggy
- Can`t open GMail...

Useless :(

Fonts are just matter of setting. Try Helvetica font ie.
too lazy to use shift key properly...

IBrowse 2.4 rocks perfectly for me - almost.

@djnick - set the fonts! It's worth it!

Otherwise - install was easy as pie. My only complaint - at work we use MS Exchang & OWA. With IBrowse 2.3 I could login in from home. Since I updated to 2.4, OWA keeps complaining that I need java enabled, which I've set all ways to heaven, even via URL prefs, but it still fails. Unfortunately, I can't get AMISSL 2.2 to install properly so that I can go back to IB 2.3 to see what I might be missing.

Other than that, I definitely see a speed improvement.

Edit - I do not think it is IBrowse that fails the Javascript - I can't get IBrowse 2.3 to connect now. I can only surmise that the new MUI clasees are interfering with the Javascript processing. :( Now I have to use windoze to connect to the work email - yuck!

Um...
IOspirit offer AmiSSL 3.6 on their site for use with IBrowse 2.4. Or did I misunderstand something here?

I never had much luck with IBrowse on my old Amiga 2000HD, so I used AWeb.  Also used AWeb on my MicroA1 until now.  The latest update for AmigaOS 4.0 contains an AmigaOS4 OEM version of IBrowse 2.4, which seems to run very well.  Haven't tried AWeb yet since I upgraded.

Comparison:
Using AmigaOS4 OEM version of IBrowse 2.4, I can add smileys to my posts by clicking on the little icons.  Can't do this with AWeb.

AmigaOS4 OEM version of IBrowse 2.4 and AWeb APL Lite both seem to pause for a long time while loading certain web pages.  On amig.org they pause while loading the page where you write up posts.  I think they may be getting bogged down by all those little message icons and smileys, which are infact gifs files.  IBrowse seems to pause a little longer, maybe due to some restrictions placed on the OEM version.

As to which is better, I haven't decided yet...

@coloni Wanted to try IBrowse2.3 with older libs to see why a javajscript required site fails despite having it enabled (said site DID work prior to this) and IBrowse2.3 doesn't like AMissl 3.

Still no luck - intalled winuae fresh so IBrowse 2.3 would have the old libs, MUI and otherwise - cannot open MS Exchange OWA, and I used to be able to!!! D**N! Not a show stopper...

As to GMail, the only thing I lack is the DELETE button, otherwise it works fine for me....

Best thing is to set up a Windows 2003 server running Terminal Services and connect to that from your miggy.

The Amiga is not and will never be capable of keeping up; especially when Internet is on the verge of upgrading itself to IP6 and Internet 2.0/Ajax all that sort of stuff...

The Amizilla is a nice project; if it ever comes from the ground, and it will probably need quite a punch cpu wise to keep up with java/flash/shockwave and fullmotion video some sites use nowadays.

Sorry for being cinical; but I've been on the Amiga side of things when Internet went mainstream; and it was one of the reason for me to go x86 all those years back.

It was nice having fast cable connection; but my A2065 could hardly keep up. Apart from the fact me not being able to do half of what I wanted on the Amiga. Wish they had ported Netscape way back then....

IBrowse is much faster then Aweb.
2.3 ran quite slow on pages that had a lot of javascript but that has been sorted for 2.4.

@mgerics

try to delete/rename the cookies in IB and the diskcache (if any).
