Quite so. Regardless of how much of a tw@t this guy was, in the current climate, his execution will almost certainly result in an escalation of violence.

Evil bugger though he was, I see precisely zero benefit in murdering him.

A long gaol sentence would be more appropriate, in my opinion.

It's also sadly ironic that Iraq was actually a much safer place with "the Butcher" in charge.

I've nothing against the principle of the death penalty, but the trial was a joke.

In general, it's impossible to determine whether a person i guilty or not to 100%, so it should be abolished, but in this case it's rather obvious that the guy is guilty.

He still deserves a fair trial, though.

Please note; I am in no way a supporter of the death penalty. In fact I find it quite ironic that John Howard would fight so diligently to save an Australian from the noose in Singapore, yet openly supports the state sanctioned murder of Saddam.

Hmmm, Saddam was responsible for killing thousands of ordainary Iraqis in cold blood, not to mention ordering the gassing of kurds in 1988.  The atrocities in Kuwait in 1990 are well documented.

So why do I not want to see this guy hang?

Because thousands of Iraqis have died since 2003, atrocities take place on the streets of Baghdad every day and the same people shat on in 1991 are still being shat on today.  Hanging Saddam won't change that one iota.

I'd be happy to see him become Manuel Noriega's cell mate, but too many have been killed in Iraq for me to want to be baying for the blood of someone else.
