Best platform for Winuae: AMD or Intel?
« on: December 18, 2006, 05:26:28 AM »
I am lookin to make a pc mainly for emulation, mainly consoles and amiga.  I wish to use an Athlon cpu or a pentium 3ghz with a geforce video card.  On a bang per buck basis should I go athlon 3200, 3500 or P4 3.0ghz.  The p4 has a bigger cache and i beleive this very important for emulating.  I know amigans have a traditionally anti-wintel bias but i just want the cpu that will give me the best performance for the price.  Currently cpu prices in Australia are Athlon 3200 $113, Athlon 3500(AM2)$139, p4 3.0ghz $117.  Is there nay advantage to going for coreduo or core2duo re:emulation

I'm a bit behind with the AMD/Intel war these days, but IIRC Intel always used to be better at number crunching. So for emulation, I think Intel would be better.

I'm not sure about it from an emulation point of view but www.tomshardware.com will give you lots of test results from different number crunching points of view.

Basically most modern processors should have cycles to spare - even the cheap, tiny cache variants.

Best bang:buck ratio is more then likely AMD option. I'd suggest you go with a AM2 CPU/Mobo.  Since Athlons were EOL'd a year plus ago, it's hard to find Athlon 3500 and what's out there, is the same pricing level as a Athlon-64 4400 Dual Core.  So for a ASUS AM2 mobo, Athlon-62 4400 x2 and a gig of DDR2, your probably looking just under $330.  Not bad at all for that type of insane horsepower.

I have used winuae/amikit on both an P41.7Gig and a AMD 1.8Gig  (really 1.5g) machine with 512mb of ram and didn't notice any but pure fast amiga emulation.
Amiga 3000: Towered, 12Mb Ram, 9Gig SCSI Hd, Retina BLT Z3, X-Surf, OS3.1
Amiga 4000D: Warp Engine \'040 40Mhz, 150mb Ram, CyberVision 64/4, X-Surf, OS3.9

Amd or Intel, it doesn't really matter. Both systems are going to be fast as hell and you won't notice the difference between the two.

What is more important than the processor ( amd or intel ) on the over all performance of the system usually boils down to the supporting chipset and associated peripherals. Nothing worse than having a crappy integrated NIC or sound card with equally crappy resource hogging driver bogging down your machine and making it unstable. And this is an extra concern when it comes to building a linux box.

Me, i'd go the intel route and run uae on windows.

I'd go for the price, which would be AMD.  I've used WinUAE a lot on a P4 laptop at 2.8 GHz, AMD Athlon 2800, AMD Athlon 3500 and now my Pavilion dx8000 laptop with a AMD Turion 64bit Mobile 2GHz and I've played games with 100% sound emulation and got perfect results.
A2000, A3000, 2 x A1200T, A1200, A4000Tower & Mediator, CD32, VIC-20, C64, C128, C128D, PET 8032, Minimig & ARM, C-One, FPGA Arcade... and AmigaOne X1000.

AMD AM2 3000+ 1.6GHZ £35 here

am2 mobo with ddr2 ram and builtin nv6100 igp £35

1gb 667mhz ddr2 ram £60

my winuae works like a charm..just perfect and is 100 times faster than any A4000 in sysinfo..well goes of the scale n red with plus sign on it..... :-o

winuae is really cool program
comes in usefull for getting a system ready quickly for your amiga.

Yes I would choose AMD AM2 CPU

The 64-bit sempron 3000+ 1.6ghz is only £35
built in ddr2 controller

it beats my old XP2600+ to shreads..amazing!!

the intel mobos are way more expensive.

Amd dual core chips are slightly more expensive than intel ones but you dont need dual core cpu for winuae.  id just get single core am2 sempron like THIS

Regards.
