C64 DTV possible new version with game download capability?
« on: December 17, 2006, 11:23:07 PM »
Hi,

Just spotted this on the "Commodore International" web site:

Quote
Commodore Gaming, a strategic partnership between Commodore International Corporation and The Content Factory, provides a wide range of game products and services. Products due for release soon include a new generation of the Commodore 64 joystick, which adds game download functionality to the features that made its predecessor famous (direct connectability to TV and PC).

Source is here.

Does anyone have any further info on this? Could be interesting and would save having to manually hack apart a DTV unit to get other stuff on to it...

I'd like one too!

Though for an Amiga version, it'd be nice to have keyboard and mouse sockets!

I bought a C64DTV and would quite happily have paid double the price or more if the unit had a PS2 port for attaching a PC keyboard, a socket to add a second joystick and an SD card slot so I could add my own games.  Oh, and most of all, somewhere to plug a power supply in so I wouldn't have to keep running it on AA batteries.

Yeah I have some more information: I brought this subject up on the VIC-20 forum DENIAL a while back after seeing it on the Commodore site.  Some of the people on DENIAL know the developers of the original C64DTV (i.e. Jeri and others) and have asked them about this quote on the Commodore website.  Apparently the developers know nothing and have not been contacted by the "new" Commodore to develop such a second generation C64-DTV.

So, until we hear more, this is just vapourware and hype.

You are aware that you can easily add the PS2 port for the keyboard, and easily bypass the batteries by soldering on a jack for a power adaptor (same voltage as batteries would supply), right?

The PAL version of the C64DTV does come with 2MBs of flashable built in memory.  Not quite an SD card but pretty good.

Some people have figured out how to hack on a second joystick port.  You'd have to do some web-searching.  I don't know how "hackish" this last mod is.

Now if only they would release a flashable NTSC version of the DTV, I would be satisfied.  Oh, yeah, and if they fixed the serious bug in the NTSC DTV version of Sword of Fargoal, too.

Thanks for that info.  I've seena few hacked C64DTVs, but people like me should be banned from owning soldering irons.  Besides, I'd like professional built unit in a neat case, not one of my bodge jobs.   :-D

Thanks.  Yep, it's a nice geek device, but what 'm looking for is something between that and the C64DTV and I'm sure that such an item could be marketed to mass consumers.

@krize: I didn't know the PAL ones were partly flashable... Thanks for the info! Unfortunately, even though I'm in a PAL country, I couldn't wait, so bought the NTSC version!

@Fransexy: A C-One would be nice, but there's a bit of a cost difference between that and a C64DTV!!

Here's my conversion of a C64 PAL DTV2 which I posted a photo of over at the Petscii Forum about 9 months ago.  I used a screwdriver case.

WalMart sells an AC adapter for use with the Jaxx Pacific (or TV Games) joysticks, and this works well with the DTV.

I can't find it on the website, but it's simply a unit shaped like the battery compartment with contacts which make contact with the battery springs on the compartment.  This unit connects to a AC adapter.  It sells for about $10.
