DVD Recording for new Amiga

I want to purchase a DVD recorder for Amiga but I don't know if the DVD recorders from pcs are suitable for Amiga or I must do some operations. Also I will be glad to know if there is software for Amiga to copy DVDs. (Like BurnIt! for CDs). Thanks...

Just to add to the question, I've heard that DVD writers work just like a hard drive in that they don't require any special software to write to them. I have no idea whether it's right or not, but if it's true, they'll work with the Amiga out of the box. My CSPPC and FroggerNG combination is a little underpowered for playing DVDs, though.

Unless there's been a major change very recently, there's no VOB creation software for the Amiga.  

As to writing data to a DVD drive as you would a CDRW, that depends on BurnIt!'s ability to recognize the drive as a writable one.

You could probably find deCSS' source somewhere and recompile it for the Amiga to use to remove DVD protection and go from there once you've overcome the basic problem of DVDRW support in whatever Amiga you're using.

Also, if you plan on taking, say, a large .IFF anim and encoding it as an MPEG-2 stream for DV, on the Amiga, forget about it.  Even middlin' end PCs (900+ mhz) take hours to compress the videos.

The mind boggles at what a 33mhz 040, or even a 150mhz (cacheless) PPC would take.

I've encoded at Mpeg-1 & Mpeg 2 on a AMD 300 with only 128MB and yes it is slow but for shorts it don't take  that long just a few hours so I'm use to it being slow, I just get it to do it over night.

The best advice advice I can give is not to buy a DVD recorder for your Amiga until the software is available - or on the verge of becoming available. Otherwise you run the risk of having a useless but expensive drive in your Amiga for many years, until it finally breaks when you've never used it for a day.

In that case you'd better wait for OS 4.0 which will support DVD-RAM and packet writing to DVD's.

Thats only on DVD RAM drives (Although OS4.0 is going to have a program to simulate that on standard DVD R/RW drives)

I currently use a DVD RAM drive on my A4K and it works great, main problem is I cant write UDF discs (Althogh thanks to the software which came with my Powerflyer I can read them)
But I can format the discs as standard Amiga hardrdrives and use it the same.

DVD R's and RW's need a program like Burn it before they can be used on the Amiga and none exist yet for DVD's.

Hardware wise they all work just great, Software wise, well the Amiga doesnt have a UDF reader as standard (which is the format for most DVD's) so you will either need to buy Allegro from Elbox (which is very good) to read DVD's although Amp2 (and others?) can read from a DVD directly.

As for recording, well as mentioned DVD RAM's can be used as standard harddrives (But for the love of god dont try to transfer data from a PC or Mac to an Amiga using one, although it is ment to be possiable)
you cant record to DVD R's or RW's yet although OS4.0 I belive is ment to fix that.

If u plan on using the recorded dvds in a dvd player then as well as writing software you will also need some sort of authoring software, someone mentioned mount rainier, i followed the link and it seems it only works with dvd+rw discs, i would not recommend using them as they are too expensive, you really need to be using dvd-r (dvd general) at the moment they are more compatible than dvd+rw and you can pick them up for little more than cd-r discs

I think Blu-Ray is better 23gb capacity or upto 2hrs HD quality or 5hrs of standard dvd quality.

To get the best out of a DVD burner use it on a platform what has software for it,  buying one for an Amiga is a waste of money.

I worked with some guys that wrote some of the first DVD authoring software and this is what I understood from our conversations.

Burning a DVD data disk is no more difficult than a CD.  But you don't just write files on the disk either... it has to be a certain format.  Just like CDs have a certain format.

Burning a DVD video disk is another matter... it's very difficult to interleave all that stuff in a way that lets a DVD play smoothly without interruption.

from what i've read about DVD copying on a PC, it's not a simple process at all.

however, i can wait for that.

what about reading DVD's on an amiga? i've just gotten WinUAE on my laptop which has a cd/DVD drive.

while i can see all my Soprano DVD sets just fine on the PC side, will I ever be able to do the same on the emulated Amiga?

not that i need to :-D

i'd like to be able to on the linux side. but there sure is no rush!
