Yeah, that's a little bit insane.  But if you consider you are gettings a

- scandoubler
- 16 bit graphics card
- 16 bit sound card

all in one, then I'd say a price of over $200US is expected.  However, I think in this case there was a bit of an insane bidding war going on.

Say what you want about it, but I still wouldn't sell mine for that.  :-P
I sold my Amiga for a small fortune, but a part of my soul went with it.

I really don't get why people wouldn't want to ship outside their own country. If the buyer pays for the postage, then what is the problem?

I would have liked that PIV as well, and indeed that is a bargain!

I can understand the buyer not wanting to ship. I sold a SX-64 about two months ago and the buyer only wanted to pay for ground shipping with no tracking availible. Now eight weeks later he says he has not received item. I told him to wait another couple weeks, or I guess I will have to refund him or have my 100% feedback marked. The point is I can not verify if he received it or not. From now on I will only ship by registered mail, if they do not want to pay the extreme fees, they can't have the item.  :rtfm:

4 hundred bucks that went for.  wow!  You could almost buy two mediators for that much, then just use disposable voodoo cards.

Well, that was actually what I meant. If I wanted that PIV so badly, even when the shipper refused to send it outside of Germany, I would have tried to convince him that I was willing to pay for full registered shipping, no matter the costs.

Plus, shipping from Germany to any other EU country really isn't THAT expensive that someone would want to have it shipped in the least expensive way. Heck, if I pay 200 Euro for a PIV, then I want to be sure that it arrives in a good order. I don't mind about that few Euros more then....

It's just not the same. The PIV is the daddy of zorro gfx cards, mainly because it has a FF/SD that is of such good quality that it is my opinion that it is unequalled.

There are several pieces of Amiga hardware that always fetch a good price because they were good back in the day and they are still good now:

1) Cyberstorm PPC
2) PIV
3) DKB3128

To some extent the other Cyberstorms are also highly valued. There are other items that are just rare. If a Fastlane Z3 with 256mb capability ever goes on ebay I suspect that will fetch a boatload of bucks. Many of these bidders are guys just tinkering around with classic Amigas as a hobby. These guys may not have had the bucks to get these add-ons at the time, but now they do and they are willing to pay for that (I fall into that group). I bought most of my upgrades well after the Amiga had no practical value in terms of a home computer (for me).
But here I am still buying Amiga hardware. I guess that hardware is worth what I am willing to pay for it. And the bottom line is a PIV is going to be worth more than any other zorro gfx card, to me.

I have to respectfully disagree.  I'm not telling anyone here anything new but just for discussion, let's review a few things:

1.  Ebay is an auction site whose prices are driven by bidder willingness to pay.  If you want something bad enough, money is no object.
2.  One man's trash is another man's treasure.  While there are newer products to be had, for whatever reason, someone out there wants this particular item so see item 1 above.
3.  To each their own.

That being said, let me add that as the supply of (working) spare components dries up, prices will go up.  It is simply the law of supply and demand.  The Picasso IV was (IMO) *THE* finest audio / video combo card of its day for the classic Amiga and many people seem to agree.  They want what they knew, not necessarily what is available now.  You can find several positive reviews on the net for all things Picasso but you may not find a review for "product X" which is still in production.

It is purely subjective.  I would not pay the price listed for this particular item but I would not hold it against the seller or the buyer at auction close.  The seller naturally wants as much money as they can get, considering that any amound will be less than what the item cost when new so they are losing any way you look at it (the law of new vs. used).

It is the buyer that sets the price (again, see item #1).

Just my opinion.  :-)
