OS4 - New Amiga - A few questions !
« on: November 29, 2006, 01:00:05 PM »
Hey all Amigaiens,

I have some, maybe rather dumb questions, but Im still
confused about Amiga nowadays. So here I go !

1. Is it possible to buy an Amiga One, fully buildt
and ready to use with OS 4 installed ?! And if so
where ?! I know its just a board but anyway..!

2. I heard a rumour... There is to come an all new
Amiga in 2007 with an all new OS... Not called
Amiga OS 5, but something else... Is that true ?
That would be my most wet dream *LOL* No that would
actually be some nice 18 year old twin sisters all
for me *LOL* Good looking and 100-50-90 :)

3. Can I use the Internet wireless with my Amiga, and
are there stuff like iTunes and so for the Amiga ?
   Can I use a USB Printer/ scanner 3-1 thingy ?

4. I Dunno... Make up a question !

5. Sell me yours.. I want one sooooo bad... My iMac is
cool... But just not an Amiga :'( And my Amiga 600 HD40
is only good for playing classic games *S*

Cheers From Flensburg Germany ( the Dane )

1. No

2. No.

3. aminet search: wireless
No iTunes. But if your music download service allows you to have the tracks as mp3/ogg then you can at least play them.
USB Printer/ scanner 3-1 thingy: Unlikely. Lack of drivers.

@TheMud

Yes You can use Wireless cards on the Amiga...ans I believe there is a program for Amiga tats like iTuns and allows you to upload from at least the iPod Shuffle.

Your Amiga 600 is NOT just good for games...its good for internet too....Wireless! and excellent for chatting. You can add USB ports as well (USB1.1 and 2.0 (no highspeed modes) but of course you will first need to add an accelerator and some RAM (Apollo 630/Winner 630/Viper 630)   if you can find one!

There is:

Yahoo Instant Messenger  (JabberWocky)
MSN Messenger (JabberWocky and Epistula and more)
AOL Instant Messenger  (AmigAIM
Gadu Gadu  (Gadami)
Jabber  (JabberWocky)
ICQ   (StrICQ)
IRC  (AmIRC

all these are available for internet on the Amiga as well as even a LIMEWIRE/Kazaa clone.  (AmiTrade Center?)

and lots more stuff!   Nowhere near as good as on the PC's in most cases, but nonetheless..............Way more Fun!
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

before forking out money for a used A1, wait for a few months and look at the big picture.  See what pans out on Genesi' side and AI's.

most of the old software works nicely (VERY quickly !) but to use software that isnt OS-friendly (ie it requires legacy custom chips) you can always use E-UAE on evilrich's homepage - that runs OCS ECS and even AGA stuff quite nicely.

as for OS4, you will need to ask the person who offered it to you, but its a really nice piece of OS work - particularly if it is one of the last 2 pre-release revisions.

I'd go for what you can find - the 4000 desktop does have space for a CD-ROM, while the 3000 desktop doesnt - but you can add SCSI external ones if you can find them.

PS: I like the idea of 100-50-90, but mid twenties are better (at my age!)

1. Ebay

2. care to share this rumor?

3. Wireless, yes. iTunes, well, we have mp3 players, ogg players, etc. but if we have a single app with capabilities like iTunes I'd love to hear about it too.

4. 17.

5. No. You wouldn't want mine anyway as I never got an OS4 install disk or registration key to use it.

I don't have a very big collection of Amiga software, but I do know that the following old software runs fine on my Micro-A1 ...

Final Writer 97, Personal Paint 7, TVPaint 3.6, and AmigaAMP can all be launched directly from OS4 Workbench and run fine.  AmigaVision will launch directly from OS4 Workbench but has many issues.  MegaBall4 will launch directly from OS4 Workbench but occupies the top left corner of the screen and will not play the music.  The actual game play is very good.

The following programs run fine on my Micro-A1 when I use the AmigaOS4 version of E-UAE to provide a more compatible environment:  Shanghai, Lore of Conquest, Amiga Appetizer package, Amiga Basic, Microfiche Filer, MaxiPlan 500, AmigaVision and MicroRexx.  MegaBall4 also runs fine under E-UAE, including music.

See also http://www.intuitionbase.com/ossoftware.php for some more info.
