Wrong cable for external SCSI ZIP drive?
« on: November 01, 2006, 07:40:24 PM »
Hi all. I just scored an external SCSI 250 Iomega Zip drive from Weird Stuff Warehouse for pretty cheap.

When I read the instructions that came with Ziptools (gotten off Aminet Set 3) they said that you have to use the cable that came with the Zip drive.

But the one that the store gave me was a modified one (I think) because one side has a female connector thats in a different color than the rest of the cable. Since both the ZIP and my A3000 have female connectors, it won't work. I tried setting it up with my regular SCSI cable, but nothing showed up on the screen and upon trying to run ZJTools, the drive didn't come up either.

A3000---25to50---Scanner--50to50--CDdrive--50to25--ZIP--terminated

Any ideas?

You probably did this but just in case you missed it - make sure the SCSI ID for the ZIP drive is unique and unused. As long as cables are proper there should be no difference about where the device goes in the chain. Also assuming proper termination, which I have never fully understood, but have been fairly lucky by just applying the try it and see method until I get the proper configuration.

Pete

It's not a parallel ZIP drive, is it?

Or a Zip plus (SCSI+Parallel)?
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

No, its a plain SCSI Zip. It has the SCSI symbol and the words ZIP on the back along with the 5/6 unit # and the termination switch.

OH, one more thing. Which of the connections do I plug it into? the one marked SCSI or the one marked ZIP?? Does anyone have the instruction book? What does that say?

No way! There was one of those here at the office thats not being used, so I had the idea of hooking it up. I managed to put the Aminet hack together, and found out how sllloooooooooooooooooooooowwww that sucker was on Parallel. Unbearable.  :-P

It shouldn't matter, but the diagram on the bottom of mine shows it plugged into the connector labeled Zip.  Make sure you set the termination correctly.

BTW, see if it comes up in HDToolbox.  Also, make sure to boot with a cartridge inside.  That might make it look less like a removable and more like a fixed disk.

Ah ha! That's probably it. I had it connected to the port marked SCSI. Thanks.

I think the guy at Weirdstuff gave me a cable for the Parallel ZIP.

For some reason, Abackup couldn't find it, but quarterback tools could.
