Which is your favourite Amiga mailer?
« on: October 31, 2006, 09:52:50 AM »
YAM beta? SimpleMail? Other?
When i first tried SimpleMail, i would have said "definitely SimpleMail" but the more i use it the more i discover that i has many annoying bugs and i'm not so sure about it anymore.

What i dislike in both YAM (beta) and SimpleMail, is that they are both damn slooow and their window layout is not very optimal for a 800x600 (or less) screen.

I use SimpleMail because it supports IMAP boxes. I don't really like it though.

What? I use YAM in 660x436 and I don't see how the window layout could be any better.

YAM is probably the only Amiga program I have that I don't need any updates for. It has no annoying bugs or things I want fixed. (HTML emails can be easily directed to IBrowse and I don't see any need for composing HTML emails)

Edit: Oh, I see you said YAM beta. There's a 2.5 beta? Has the layout or speed gotten worse? If so, just use 2.4 p1.

Well, i believe that the segment in which the messages are displayed is a bit small, that's all. Both clients have basically the same layout, i'm more worried about their slowliness than this.

 Ehm, yes..

Has the layout or speed gotten worse?

 Sadly, Yes for both.
Edit: For the speed yes. The preferences of the layout are subjective.

 Perhaps i'll do that.

Anybody recommend a mailer that don't look too bloated on standard PAL (640x200-something) screens?

There's also a very basic GadTools mail program called MiniMail. It's pretty limited, but it works in low-memory conditions on my A600.

SPOT.

I used to run it @ that resolution on a 1084s from my A1200, before switching up to an A4000 + 1942.

I use YAM. IIRC its the PPC compiled one, can't remember if its 2.4 or 2.5 though!
works fine, but the one annoyance is that I can't get it to display properly those pesky HTML emails people keep sending me ! anyone got any hints ?

I used to run YAM 68k (Definitely 68k!) on my 1200 at 800x600 on a Mikrovitek 1438s monitor, no problems there ! besides, it is MUI, so you can configure EVERYTHING about the display if you can be ar5ed!

Well, i believe that the segment in which the messages are displayed is a bit small, that's all.

You can of course configure the size of the segment used for mail display: above the header lines of the mail is a seperator line which can be moved using the mouse. The position of the seperator line is saved using the optional "save window position" border gadget that can be activated in MUI prefs, or by configuring MUI to save window positions when closing a window.

If you're using small(ish) screen resolutions, it might be better to completely disable said segment anyway (config->read) and display mails in a seperate window. There's nothing YAM can do to gain more space when there is no space available on the screen.

Things you can do to gain space: reduce font sizes in MUI prefs, disable vertical scroll bars for Nlist etc. in MUI prefs, switch toolbar.mcc from "Icons" to "Text only" in MUI prefs...

Edit: For the speed yes.

What CPU are you using? Granted, YAM (or rather: MUI) is no speed daemon, but there's only so much you can do with a 15 year old CPU. And YAM/MUI does a lot more than that.
