What's a Base 1? If its a stock 2000, not much $50-$100.

All you need to run 3.5/3.9 is enough ram, and a CDrom drive. That's the minimum. A RTG video card is recomended with 3.9.

I think you might be confused. OS 3.5 and 3.9 is the software and they both come on CDs. To run them, you need the 3.1 ROM chips.
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)

Sadly a bog-standard A2000 won't give you a lot of money. I picked one up for 20 Euros a few weeks ago and that is a machine with 68020, SCSI, extra RAM, Amiga internal Genlock and some harddrives, as well as an 8088 bridgeboard. My advise: If you've got the room, keep it! Make sure the battery won't leak and use it as a onrament for the house, play with it on the first cold day of the year.

The 1200 and the Blizzard should keep you busy for some time to come :-). If the 1200 came with Workbench 3.0 (it should have!) you can check the version of your ROM with Showconfig. It should help you determine if you've got the 3.0 or 3.1 ROMs. If you've got the latter there's no need to buy them.

From what I know 3,9 is especially handy if you're having a PPC and a grafix card. Correct me if I'm wrong but I guess 3.5 should be good enough for the 1200 you own.

Hmmm.... from the info comming from Google the Nec 3550 is a DVD writer. Now, that's pushing the Amiga to her limits big time!  My feeling says that this drive is just a little too much 2000 hardware for 1990s technology.

Normally, adding a 'standard' IDE CD-Drive should be no problem, you probably only need an adapter-cable from 2.5" IDE to 3.5" IDE. And you'll be needing a CD-Filesystem for the Amiga.

If you've got a Linux/Apple/Windows PC you'd better use that box for burning CD's. Not that the Amiga isn't capable of doing so but I'd not go through the hassle to get it done.

Once you have a Blizzard, use blizzkick (found on Aminet) to rekick a 3.1 ROM image to RAM (it's illegal if you don't have one for your own), and a CD-ROM OR CD-RW as a 2nd device on your IDE. /-/

If you have the SCSI kit, you can also use a SCSI CD-ROM instead the IDE one (much, much more faster).

For install the 3.9 WB: try if you will. It runs on a 1200 ks3.0 with 030/25, but will suck! Slow as hell.

If you like a better screen, funcionallity, etc; :-) try 3.5 and make some patches on then (try Aminet). :rtfm:
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

No way "slow as hell". The most common source of the slowliness is the new exec.library which is written in C and in some rare cases it is loaded in Chip-ram which produce a big slow-down.
Another smaller source of slow-down is the new ram-handler, but you will hardly notice anything if you don't use the ram disk much.
So, if you choose not install these 2, i don't think that you get a slower than OS3.5 system! I use to run it on the same card that amazing is using, i should know.

I just notice it. KS3.0 you say? I suppose that you softkicked a 3.1 ROM image because OS3.9 won't work properly otherwise.

I think it's objective to say that WorkBench 3.9 is more functional. Especially after the recent updates on Aminet which are available only for WB3.9, iirc.

 Patches are inevitable eitherway.
