Question about OS for a A1200
« on: May 21, 2003, 05:26:49 PM »
Please be gental... i still have not tried the harddrive, but when i ripped it out from the guts of a PC laptop it was working just fine... Now the question is 1 what would i want to run on it, and 2 how do i get it there?

Last off, i did some checking on my floppies.. looks like i have 1 copy of my Workbench 3.0 survive, and thats just the up and walk os floppy, none of the other disks are around, or atleast i have yet to find them. i did find the original "extras" floppy, i cant read it tho. any ideas?`I guess i will have to somehow transfer a working os on to the hard drive and work from there, but i have no clues as to how...

You guys with supperior knowledge might be of any help?

Thankfull for any hint/tip.
B!

You're gonna need the original Installation/Prep disk to set up your hard disk.  This disk has all the install scripts needed to copy OS3 to your hard drive.  I'm not sure if this disk is still covered by copyright though.......  You could try www.amibench.org to place an ad on the classified section.  These guys are usually very helpful.

Once the prep disk is sourced, you'll need to set those pesky max-transfer settings........

Hey there, i did this last night! Workbench 3.1 comes with 6 disks, you need them all to do an install as far as i know, You will need to format the drive and partittion it ( i think -correct me if im wrong, this is what i did last night). The workbench disks then have an install proggy to run them and then you dont need the disks, it boots off the drives. :-D

It's not that difficult to do really - the prep disk is the main problem because some OS3.0 systems (mine included) didn't ship with them.

There should be a readme file on there which will tell you step by step what you need to do.

Hhum, so im guessing i have to figure out somewhere to obtain a set of the workbench OS?

That must be my first step, as i dont even have that.
I'll look in to that, is there any other os i should be considering? i would not think so, but better to ask, and get a "no" then not to know what you miss...

I would be looking for the Workbench 3.1 if i undrstand it right btw? would that run with my 3.0 kick rom? (atleast i THINK it was 3.0, i guess i have to hook it up and check again)

Thanks

If I were you, I would try to find someone who lifes near you and has an amiga, and see if you can arrange an install-meeting. Installing a harddrive can be a little troublesome for the first time.

i still havent been poking in all the boxes in the storage room, but my neighbor started looking strangely at me, so i got afraid the would call the cops or something... not everyday someone goes through loads of boxes in the block storage room i bet :- )

Just to let you know, the disks you need are labeled..

Workbench
Extras
Install
Locale
Storage
And there is one more... damm cant remember it. I had problems with my set, the disk labeled" Extras" was actually "Storage", so i didnt have a complete set, and they were original disks :-(

before you start thinking about buying a new set of OS 3.1 disks you need to know whether your A1200 has the right ROMs fitted.

If it is a Commodore Amiga 1200 then it will almost certainly have the 3.0 ROMs (unless you or a previous owner has fitted newer ROMs)

If it is an Escom/AT Amiga 1200 it will have 3.1 ROMs. If you have this version then you can install your 3.1

Easiest way to tell? The badge above the Escape and F1 keys will either say "AMIGA A1200" with the new Amiga logo (3.1) or "Commodore A1200" (3.0)

Hope this has been some help!  :-D

I aint much for the easy way out... i knew allready from start i had the 3.0 kickrom,
so if im getting the 3.1 i need the roms aswell. i found it in the german store,
both disks and roms, for 36€ if i remeber right, guessing 40-45€ with all fees payed and so on..
While the swedish shop was even more then that...
For a few roms worth a buck a pice and a few disks... I can see how they make a living :- )

yes, im a cheapscate... im looking around for what my friends got first...
If possible one of them got a 3.1 kickrom set for me... i'll steal that :- )

Thanks for all the advices...

Hi,

You don't necessarily need the 3.1 ROMs to run OS3.1 on a 3.0 system as I'm doing this on Amiga #2 right now.  However, should you wish to upgrade to OS3.5/9 then you'll need the ROMs.

I got mine for Amiga #1 from www.amibench.org, after placing an ad.  You'll need A1200 specific ROMs though, so don't be tempted by anything that has come from any other model of Amiga.
