Floppy support in OS4/AOne
« on: May 21, 2003, 10:04:34 AM »
Hi everybody,

I'm just wondering about the floppy support in OS4 and in special on AmigaOne.

As the AOne has a standard PC-floppy, how will the the floppy access be handled? Will there be an new amiga floppy format or is CrossDos allways enabled?

What I think is that whith the AOne and OS4 you can access pc floppys directly, caused through some OS4 screenshots with PC0: icons...

Any suggestions on that?

BTW, wasn't CrossDos a thirt party component?

;-) As I recall, it was.  Certainly version 7 is commercial software.  As for the rest, as I understand it, the ability to read/write Amiga formatted floppies has to do with the controller.  That's why UAE cannot read Amiga disks on a PC.

There is an after-market controller which is supposed to be able to read Amiga floppies, and potentially (with the right drivers) any disk format in existence.  This is called the Catweasel.  An Internet search should be able to turn up dealers.

Well, the floppy format on the AmigaOne will be dictated by the VIA chip which does track recognition in hardware. That means trackdisk.device is obsolete. You just need a viafloppy.device or whatever it'll be called and then you can use FFS or FAT or whatever on top of that.

For trackdisk floppies or trackloaders, use a Catweasel.
Oh, and there's really no need for crossdos anymore. Just have fat95-handler in L: and use that, right?

So, will it be possible to boot from that drive?

I still can't imagine a pc-floppy with ffs

Can a catweasel boot from an atached amiga floppy?

What would be the point?  Your Amiga trackdisk floppies are 68k code, and hit the hardware most likely too.

Why not? AROS uses FFS on a PC disk, that can be recognised by a PC floppy controler.

Why not ? It's exactly how it will work on the A1.

I realised I'd just said OS4 didn't have floppy support when Thomas was just talking about it. It's just that I read sometime before that Hyperion were dropping floppies as dead technology and concentrating on more useful things. Guess not. ;-)

But on second thoughts, I have to ask...it is this floppy support direct, or does it need the Catweasel?

Concidering that this thread is about using FFS on a standard PC floppy controler and that the AmigaONE/Pegasos have PC south bridges which include the PC floppy controler... I would say that it's highly unlikely that you would need a catweasel!

At least I can select "boot from floppy" in the BIOS of my AmigaOne, so, I think, it can.
But this has nothing to do with OS4 (it's like you can boot from a linux disk on PC).
