Lucky find
« on: October 20, 2006, 09:33:32 PM »
Hi all, with my wife going to town to get some shopping in, I saw inside a front garden a tower case and monitor.
Asking the owner of the Items if I could have the tower case, she told me yes sure just take it I am trying to get rid of it, it dont work.
So took it home dried it out as it was raining.
Sure enough the mobo and CPU was totaly screwed up.
I took out an NVidia GX-440 8x AGP card tested and Working
SB128 sound card tested and working
2 x 128Mb SD DIMM ram tested and working
20 gig HD tested and working
Fast ethernet card 3COM tested and working
52 x CD rom tested and working
and the tower case of course, with a good clean it will come up nice.
FLoppy drive tested and working.

The 20Gig HD is now in my Amiga 1200.
GX-440 agp is in my Athlon.

This has to be one lucky find.

The PSU has a very dodgy mains plug fitting so I think that actualy took the mobo and CPU out. (possible shorting)

You should also check out your local recycling centres if you are interested in making similar finds. It happens that they throw out 1-2 year old pcs just with a broken cdrom! Someone i know who work at such a centre has found himself one p3 1+ghz laptop and a p4 one and the problem with both of these was that the monitor cable had gotten loose :-o

Amiga equipment is on the other hand harder to find.. The only amigas i came over so far is two working a500 and one smashed a500.

Yes I know what you mean, the one company I used to work for threw out a new electronic typewriter because it didnt work.
I asked them for it, gave me the go ahead took it home to find the power lead was not presed into the back completely it was only half way in.

So there loss my gain.

Its amazing how many people do this.

I think the best one for me was when I was 17 the next door neighbour threw out a new stereo deck, so I claimed it to find there was no needle in the head, went down to the local shop got a new needle put it in and woooooo yes a new deck.
She said its better to throw it awaw than to get it fixed.
Did I tell her ?   errrrrr NO.

@swift240

Congrats on your find.  But I got to tell you.I find Pentium 4 computers with 40 gig HD regularly here in New York. and Pentium III's and II's all the time.....almost every week!   I have even found 2 Amiga 3000's on different occasions.....and an A2000, and an A5000 with 1084s Monitor.......all in the trash!   The A3000 had an Emplant board in it.and the second one had an Opal Vision card in it.  the A2000 was bare but clean as heck if I remember correctly.   People are psycho here in NY....actually they are a very disposable society............we are too materialistic here.

Sucks for them!  but not for me! Their Trash my Treasure :-)

I could probably give half of AmigaORG members 40gig HD's or 20gig ones.......thats how much I find!

also SDRAM 256mb sticks and 512mb ones.

I dont believe in Buying computers anymore!   they grow on trees here in NYC :-)
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

Not bad, but as I read through the first paragraph, I thought for sure you were about to reveal.... a tower 4000!

So I was a bit disappointed. But then would I have felt any better if you got a free 4000T and I didn't. Probably not. :-)
