Highest version of Windows emulated on an Amiga

Since you can put the dos card in the Ami than you should be able to install up to Win98. Has anyone got this setup on their amiga and is it fast/stable enough? Or is this question way off base?

Windows XP Pro on Bochs.

This was on Pegasos II G4 1GHz, and it was way too slow to be usable.

On classic, I'd say Win 3.x is the best option speedwise. I remember trying Win95 on A1200 060 and it was quite unbearably slow.


[EDIT]Oops, missed the dos card bit. Depends on the card I guess, the fastest 486 should run win98 I suppose. It won't fly, however.[/EDIT]

If by "the dos card" you mean one of the bridgeboards, then you can get Windoze 3.1 running on it. You need a VGA card and preferably, a dedicated HD. I remember doing this back in the day... but pulled it out before Win95 was available. There is only 8MB of RAM on the bridgeboard, I suspect 95 and 98 would have a problem with that.

I got Windows 98 running on my A500. Well... not really, but it's the DOS from Windows 98 ;-). When starting in PC-Task, it says "Starting Windows 98".

Depends on how you interpret "Emulate". Since you are speaking of a dos card I suspect you mean hardware emulation. I run Win98 pretty decent on a Vortex Golden Gate 486 Bridgeboard (16MB RAM/Co-Pro etc).
There are also SBC (single board computers) as fast as Pentium 4 or Xeon you could stick in your Amiga; but this isn't really emulating; there is no interaction whatsoever between that SBC and the Amiga. Using a KWM switch however; it is pretty fun to use a fast Windows XP machine from within your Amiga

My first Amiga was an A2000 with a 8088 IBM Bridgeboard. I found it very usefull at the time. Since my office was operating on IBM machines, I had the luxury of being able to run programs like Lotus 123, DBaseIII and later on DBaseIV under DOS3 on my Amiga. My machine at work was also runing WordPerfect and it was all KBoard commands while on my Amiga it was all drop down menus with the mouse doing all the works. I also had my C64 running GEOS again using a mouse. Boy oh boy...the good old days of feeling like a king. I did buy PCTASK and ran W3.1....that was a real joke.
That was my last attempt at trying to make my Amiga run like a IBM PC.  :-D

have you done this? if so what type sbc did you use. i was going to get an sbc on ebay to mess around with, including putting it in my amiga 3000. i tried to do a little research on the net for the best type but i couldnt find much.
in particular i was thinking of modding a 3d modeller and animation setup i have and providing a hook for povray, so that some stuff for the modeller etc ran on the sbc.
i would use ethernet, or if i had to parnet of some type, to send data back and forth. although parnet would be pretty slow.

Not yet; although I have seen a few models I might consider. Things to look out for are obvious: Cooler shouldn;t be too big; It should power from ISA Slot (rules out P4 SBC's; or you need a +12V line coming from your CPU; and it should have integrated VGA/PS2 and Ethernet. I'll PM you about some options...

A friend used to have a 486 bridgeboard in an A2000 that ran Windoze 95 OK. 98 was a bit on the slow side

But as far as I know, the final version of the GoldenBridge (is that its name, I can't remember) supports CPU's up to 586... I don't know about the hardware in general or how these bridgeboards actually works, but it at least seems logical that they would be able to run Windows98... not so sluggish that it is completely not useable... but I don't know... only guessing.
