I'm new and need help finding Vista for the Amiga
« on: September 29, 2006, 02:44:55 PM »
Hello, everyone!

I used to be an Amiga user until about 1996 or 1997. I got a lot of use out of my Amiga when I was in art school. But my machine eventually became unreliable and malfunctioned. Since then I moved on to the Macintosh and now I'm using a PC.

I have fond memories of the Amiga and I was delighted to find UAE, the Amiga emulator program. I have been able to download a few old game "disks" in the form of .adf files. I don't know if UAE is the best emulator. But that is not my main question.

Another minor question I'd like to ask is where I might find .adf files of the various Workbench disks. I'm not interested in piracy. However, if Amiga software is considered "abandonware," then I would like to know of a way I might obtain free copies of old Amiga programs.

My main question, and the reason I'm posting in this forum, is this: where can I find an .adf copy of Vista, one of the first landscape programs that was published by Virtual Reality Laboratories? I know that this sounds very strange. The first probable answer to this question would be to buy a modern copy of VistaPro that is available for the PC. I do not want VistaPro version 4 or any modern version for the PC. I've already tried that. It can't generate a specific landscape that I want. I specifically want a copy of the original Vista program for the Amiga.

I need this program for artistic reasons. When I used this program, I would always enter a specific "random seed" value so that it would always generate the same landscape. This would generate a Digital Elevation Map (DEM) that I eventually used in other programs. However, I lost that file a long time ago. But I have not forgotten how it was generated. If I only had a copy of Vista (or maybe VistaPro version 1 for the Amiga would help too) I might be able to generate a new copy of the DEM that I could use in a modern landscape program like Bryce on the PC. From there I could use it in my artwork. I know this sounds mundane, but it is of great personal artistic importance to me.

Do any of you know where I could find a copy of Vista or maybe VistaPro version 1 for the Amiga? If anyone could help me, this could bring to an end a personal quest that has lasted for almost a decade.

I do not wish to engage in piracy. However, I am guessing that the original version of Vista is "abandonware." If it was still available for sale, I would gladly buy it. But I cannot find it for sale anywhere on the internet. I can't even find bootleg pirated copies either. I'm hoping that somewhere out there is a loyal Amiga user that still has a copy of the program and has the capability to translate the program disk into a .adf disk image format or a similar format that can be used in an Amiga emulator.

I look forward to helpful responses. If you wish, you can send me an email to flamegrape@hotmail.com

Thank you,

fg

The final Amiga version of VistaPro (3.05) still had the ability to create landscapes from random seed and load/save DEM files. It was available free on a CU Amiga magazine coverdisk.

Amiga Workbench software is not abandonware and can still be purchased at Amigakit.com, Softhut?, and in the AmigaForever CD.

If it's a question of the application and not the Amiga experience (and I understand if it's the latter), then you might have a look at VistaPro 4.0 for the PC.  Higher resolutions, greater color depth, but an identical user interface (plus a smaller chance the OS will fall down go boom  because of memory protection issues while rendering a great hunk of landscape).

@B00tDisk

He said he wasn't interested in VistaPro 4.0 becuase he was trying to render one specific landscape.

He did say he didn't want the PC version.

My best recommendation is to set up a search on ebay and just keep your head in there looking around.

Do not post links or requests for warez.
Warez in our definition is illegal software up to and including "abandonware". The exception is if the person is KNOWN to have the legal right to distribute said software. This is not debatable.

There is no link to a piracy site that I see.

If requesting abandonware is against forum policy, then I apologize.

If anyone knows where I can buy a copy of Vista for the Amiga, that would be great. However, I know that it's not going to happen. You can't buy it anywhere. I've been looking for almost a decade.

My only hope is that someone out there has an old copy of the disk. If anyone has Vista for the Amiga, please contact me via email.

Well, old versions of AmigaOS are still licensed and commercially sold as part of the Amiga Forever product, so at least that is not "abandonware". This includes workbench and kickstart ROM images. Just FYI...

I've got some Vista something floppies somewhere. I'll look around this weekend and se what exactly they are. They came with one of the systems I got at some point and I've never used them. I may or may not have a manual for it, and may or may not have some expansion disks as well.

I do not have Vista or Vista Pro, but I do have Vista Lite on CU Amiga's Super CD-ROM III. If this will do for you, I can send it to you. I don't use the CD anyway...

Cheers,

Welcome back

Amiga Forever
www.amigaforever.com/online/

Aminet (online repository for amiga software)
http://aminet.net/search.php?query=vistapro

Also if you find someone that has vistapro them might generate the DEM file for you if you supply the random seed that you use.

FYI-
OS4depot.net is OS4 only software and will NOT run under winUAE or any variant.
