CD32 or 1200 games
« on: September 20, 2006, 05:17:01 PM »
So my CD32 and SX-1 showed up last night, and all was well with the world.

However, the auction didn't have any regular Amiga games with it, only CD32 discs, so I haven't been able to test the SX-1 - although it DOES boot to a Workbench screen, which I assume is a good sign.  :P

Anyways, I am going to hopefully be buying some games here soon, and my question is;
If a game I am interested in is available for both the CD32 and the (let's say) Amiga 1200, which one is better, if either.  I'm not sure if one or the other would have inherent benefits or strengths.  I have heard of certain Amiga games not working right with the SX-1, so I was leaning towards CD32 when applicable, but I wanted to get some advice from the pros before I started buying up games.

Thanks in advance, as always.

generally the CD32 version will be better since the planar2chunky routines are done in hardware

also, alot of CD32 games support a mouse and keyboard (the SX-1 gives you an AT keyboard port)

I had WB 3.1 on my CD32 + SX-1.  It worked well.

I think its going to vary on a game by game basis.

If you like adventures the CD32 versions of Simon the Sorceror and Beneath a Steel Sky make a lot of sense, no faffing about with multiple disks, and a cool talkie soundtrack. But Dark Seed is a disaster. The A500 version is in higher res, and supports the mouse which the CD32 version doesn't - criminal in a point and click adventure. Similarly the CD32 version of UFO: Enemy Unknown is inferior to the 1200 version. When you save it does not store all the information about your bases.

The CD32 version of Wing Commander is possibly as good an example as any of an improved production, it makes the AGA and ECS versions look horrible. CD32 Frontier is basically ECS but it is the latest version of the game ever written. The downside is that while it supports the mouse, occasionally clicking a mouse button in a base will cause your lasers to fire, upsetting the authorities and damaging your reputation.

In short, its a case by case thing.

Both... Some CD32 titles had been enhanced with CD music, animations etc, but alot are straight 1200 ports with the addition of CD32 joypad support.

For floppy games check out Whdload, you can install hundreds of games direct to your sx-1 harddisk and will also fix most compatibility issues too

like says Angus, it's case by case

some cd32 titles are better and some A1200 games are better
however most of them have no diferences and the game is identical

here are some cool and enchanced cd32 titles better than the floppy version

Fire and ice cd32  (very enchanced and the best cd32 title)

Alfred chicken cd32

Steel sky cd32 (have english voices however you can not save on any point like the floppy version)

Zool cd32

Road kill cd32  (have a cool intro)

bye, Laser
