Amiga 600 broken disk drive
« on: September 15, 2006, 03:20:14 PM »
Hi guys im about to throw a fair few questions at you (sorry)

My Amiga 600 disk drive stopped working many years ago, i have tried cleaning it but it hasn’t helped :-(

It boots up fine and tries to load the disk but it ither stops at the title screen of the programme or does not even get that far.

I guess i have a few options what would you guys recommend?

1 Try and fix it if you guys know of a common problem with them and could give me some advice.

2 Buy an Amiga 500 or 600 of ebay and hope it works.

3 try and locate a new disk drive

4 send it somewhere in the UK to be fixed.

I have always really enjoyed the games and paint packages the Amiga offered I’m gutted even now they dont work anymore.

What would you guys suggest? any help at all would be fantastic because I’m stuck on what to do.

Also what is the likelihood that a lot of my old Amiga 600 games wont work even if i do get a working Amiga again because they are well over 10 years old now and have been up in my attic for a while
thanks in edvance
Simon

I'ld try to find a replacement diskdrive, but that's just me. Replacing the diskdrive is about as simple a repairjob as you find on the A600, so you could give that a try.

And your guess about your old disks still working is as good a guess as mine. I have disks with files on them still working flawlessly after 20 years regular use. Other disks have failed within weeks of purchase... With luck, most of your disks will still work, but you can only be sure after trying it.
Life sucks. Then you die. Then they throw mud in your face. Then you get eaten by worms. Be happy it happens in that order... My Amiga 1200

is your attic a humid place ? if it's dry, and you kept the disks in way that they don't contain dust and subject to magnetic fields and sunshine, they should be ok.

In the summer it gets very hot up there, so yeah that could be a problem.

Where would i be able to get a new disk drive from? are there many Amiga parts that you can buy on the web?
