A3000 + cybergraphics (vga pass through) + os3.9
« on: September 11, 2006, 08:25:59 PM »
I tried installling OS3.9 on my A3000 without a graphics card -- it was terribly slow. Does having a video accelerator like the cybergraphic 64 with video passthrough make this OS a pleasant experience with the same performance as 3.1?

Adding a graphics card makes a big difference in performance terms.  It also frees up Chip RAM for other applications.  Additionally the enhanced resolutions give a more useful work area in terms of colors and space to run multiple applications.

Example Workbench 3.9 on a graphics card:

A3000+CV64 is a fast and fun experience :-)

Remember to add some fast ram as 24bit images eat a lot of ram (a 040/40 or 060 accelerator may be useful too)

I have 18MB ram currently.

No accelerator other than my base 030. Woudl 24 bit images just slow things down too much.

I'd love an 060 accelerator, but from what I see, I am not ready to pay C$500 for one of these :(

Is the Dock on this picture the AmiDock bundled with OS 3.9 ?
If so, how does one make those separation bars, and the separated names field ?

Thank you ! :-)

I found that just a 68030 was too slow for me.  The A3640 68040 board put enough kick in it to make it bearable.  You should be able to find one of these cheap.  Currently I have a WarpEngine 68040/40 and it's fine.  We would all like 68060 boards, but they are expensive and rare.

Yes this is a standard OS 3.9 AmiDock

To make the separation bars just create a two pixel wide icon in IconEdit and then rename it as a single space.

Just out of curiosity, what speed 030 were you using prior to your 040 upgrade?  I currently have an 030/40mhz (for my A500) but haven't used OS3.9.  I'm wondering if the accelerator is going to be fast enough.

The base 25MHz of an A3000.  Remeber, we're talking about 24-bit video cards here.

It ran OS 3.9 just fine under ECS, just not so pretty.  Make sure you've got fast RAM on the accelerator itself.  RAM comming off of the expansion slot is going to be very slow.

IMHO, rtg is as important as a cpu/fastram upgrade...
even if you had a cs-ppc, without rtg it would not be enjoyable... even with the same cpu, rtg makes things way faster!

I'm getting a RTG card for my stock 3000, and I have 3.5 currently.

What's the best combination to get decent looking icons and max speed?

One fast option is a Prometheus and Voodoo 3

Hmmmmmm. Tempting!  :pancake:

Is there any functional difference between a Cybervision64-type RTG and the above mentioned RTG card, besides needing a towerized 3000?

howdy,
I have a
a3000 desktopp
phase5 060/50 mk2
cv46
networkcard (a4066)
par card
sunrize 516

this setup is SO bad A$$!  The cv64 is great! it's fast, not sure how you would do without the 060, it's one of those things, once you get it you won't go back!
this setup is performing SO well that I may turn it into a linux box....
