Is Troika AMY 05 a hoax?
« on: September 10, 2006, 01:58:36 PM »
I've heard a lot of rummors,Wondered if there is any proof of this new hardware and others. As so much hardware has been promised over the years but only eyetech has actually made good of next generation hardware. eg Gateway's MMC, Power computing's A5000, A6000, Index Information's Boxer etc.

Eyetechs hardware wasn't really great either I understand...

OS4 looks nice but there's no hardware and no actual prove that this may change any time soon. Hyperion hasn't confirmed any of the so called next gen hardware projects to be real either.

I'll just wait and if there ever comes OS4 hardware that I would like maybe I'll buy. It has to offer enough performance; I'm not going to pay 1000 euros for a 600MHz computer; sorry...

Nobody know whether Amy05 is a hoax except the people "developing" it. Nobody else has seen it

Don't know if they're a hoax or not, it's just that they haven't shown us a single reason from which we could think that they are "for real"...

If they really manage to present a non-working prototype (hooray!) at BB4 (remember, they already failed last year), that would probably change their status from "hoax" to "extremely pathetic progress".
At Big Bash 5 in 2007 we'll then see Amy'05 booting half-way into Linux accompanied by a "progress" report before saying that they finally selected the "amazing" Sil0680 as their IDE controller chip.

Its just the usual "wait and see" kind of thing that goes on around here.

Just be careful not to pre-order anything :-o

So far, Troika and their Amy 05 looks real (maybe it should be called Amy 06/07?). Mind you, hoaxes are designed to look real too. If they don't manage to produce hardware, it doesn't necessarily mean that it was all a hoax. The Boxer was real, but never made it all the way to production. I hope that they or some other group manage to get OS4 licensed PowerPC hardware out.

Regardless of the whole anonymity (no names, no address) of Troika, I think there will be many (mainly on AW.net) who would even do that.
But... I would also hide my name if it's highly probable that what I do might turn out as either a hoax or failure.  ;-)

What makes them look "real"? Their "progress" reports? Their anonymity? Their website?
The website of this fine "corporation" must then look even less like a hoax?!  :-P

Too many people get worked up over new "hardware".  Would it be nice?  yes.  But over the past x amount of years we've had how many companies buy Amiga, go bankrupt, promise x and deliver nothing?  Best thing to do is read about whatever comes out and treat it as vapour until you have proof.  Why would a legitimate company give a "progress report" about a "progress report" ?  Just sit back and enjoy classic computing at its finest.  If anything worthwhile shows up with tangible proof then lets have a look/see :)    Keeps you from being disappointed.

unless I can hold a motherboard in my hands I don't believe it exists.

Troika may very well be developing Something, but I'm not paying Any attention until there's something that works.

But even if it "exists", would that really help us unless it boots into OS4 and Troika managed to get a license from Amiga Inc.?

Thats probraly the most convincing reason why they might not be an hoax  :-D  :-D
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

this thread reminds me of that PPC mobo that was sold for $19.99 somewhere.. dude said he was making a PPC mobo (or solution) for the Amiga and it would run AOS4 then said he gave up for whatever reason.. I forget where I read this, its been a while.

   Brilliant!

@humppa

IWin's been confirmed as a hoax for a while now. Plus, I don't like the look of their website.

Troika have occasionally posted "updates" that at least sound plausible. The technical detail is correct. They also appear to have actually contacted both Amiga Inc and Hyperion.

There was another project that claimed to be in the works with a photo showing a crashed U-Boot loader. However, one of the Friedens (who is an OS4 developer) said that he had no knowledge of this project at all. That sounds more like a hoax.

Either way, I said that they LOOK real. I have seen no concrete evidence to either prove or disprove that they really are developing what they claim to be developing.
