Get a Viper spacecraft,and nothing more than a 5mw pulse laser.... some shield are also recommended. This is what i used,when i played it a long time ago,and this is all you need.

If you have a laser turret, you can pause the game, look for the enemy, aim, fire, and unpause the game. BOOM!  :-D

I found the combat in Frontier extremely tedious. In the end I resorted to (indeed) a Panther with some beefy lasers and stuff =).

Yes,agree! Pirates had a pattern of flight,it seems like,and where easy to guess what they would do next. i evended the ods by using a Viper,minimal equiped  :-)
