DCE Scandoubler
« on: September 07, 2006, 12:58:23 PM »
I'm sure this has been covered many times before, but....

Just how good is the DCE Scandoubler?  Will it allow all screen modes to be displayed by your average TFT?  Does it require any additional cooling?

Also, on a slightly different note, does the 23-pin to 15-pin VGA adapter (as sold by Amikit) contain a chip to invert the RGB signals?

TIA
A1200, M-Tec 1230 @28MHz, FPU, MMU, 8Mb fast ram, SCSI card, 512Mb HD, Power CDROM drive, PS2 optical mouse

The VGA adapter sold by Amiga kit (did you mean that?) is sadly purely wires, nothing else whatsoever.  Personally I have had poor results from it on my TFT with MAJOR vertical banding.  Basically every line of pixels was lighter/darker than the line next to it making it completely unusable.
It looks a lot better on a CRT but I can still slightly make out some banding to a MUCH lesser extent, probably not noticable if I hadnt been looking for it (although I have a keen eye so I might have).  The fact its on the CRT is interesting though as otherwise I would assume its a sync issue with the TFT.  I will have to take a photo at some point to see if anyone recognises the symptom.

I wouldnt swear its a problem with the cable though. Perhaps my A1200 has a faulty video output.  It never did it when it used to be on an old interlaced RGB monitor, but its been in storage for years since then. Works fine over composite though so I dunno what to blame.

Theres a reason the scandoubler costs almost £100 and the VGA adapter does not I guess.  :-D

Theres no way I can rationalise spending that much money on the Amiga though.  Already buying the 030 I think was a bit OTT but I wanted more RAM and it was the most practical way to get it.

@ Doppie1200

Thanks for the info - nice work on the DCE mod!

@Alexatkin

Oops - yes I did mean Amigakit - sorry Amigakit!

Ah - just wires.  Looks like I'm going to have to make an adapter with signal inverter then - simple enough, but hampered by the lack of 23-pin D sockets.  I'll see whether I can bodge a 25-pin jobby to fit.  The banding issue on the TFT is an interesting one.

The DCE scandoubler is pricey and as much as I love my Amiga, I too can't justify spending that much for what is now a hobby.  If it wasn't for the lack of space in my computer room, I'd hook up my perfectly good 1084S.  In the time being I'll just have to put up with using the composite output connected to my pc's DVT card to view on my TFT instead.
