advice on putting Ami in a PC tower
« on: September 06, 2006, 08:28:07 AM »
A local computer surplus store has a few PC tower cases for practically nothing, and the thought of putting my A3000 in one was tempting. After looking on Aminet, the idea of putting my A1200 in one made me a little squemish. But, the idea of using PCI cards makes the old bugger seem pretty good. What should I consider if I happen to get something like that? Size, technical knowhow, time spent, etc.

Well i had searched to do this some time ago but at the end i bought a second hand tower . Seeing the size of it and all the needed cuts you must do in order to fit an A 1200 inside , well it doesnt worth it . First you must get a big enough tower for the A1200+accelarator board to fit . If you want a mediator too you must consider that maybe the pci brackets want fit on a pc tower .... Also how can you fit the A1200 motherboard is a problem cause an amiga tower has a second base which on this the Amiga fits . For an unexpanted amiga it is easier but eventually if you want to have pci card , mediator board or accelarator you must search for a tower which is designed for Amiga ... Also on the gallery here are some pictures of the  inside of towers so have a look at them .

Yes, I'd agree with that. My A1200T doesn't have any pci cards so there was no problem other than finding a tower box big enough for the motherboard. Its still a tight squeeze as it is so tall it goes up by the side of the CD drive space by the psu, so look carefully when deciding!
If you have pci cards maybe you had better buy a special box else the pci slots won't line up etc etc :-(
Good luck  :-D

Hum,
with my Full tower i just had to rotate the power box to make room, and saw a strip off the back plate.

Whoops, guess I should have been more specific.  I'm thinking of putting the A3000 in the tower. My 1200 is fine in its original case for now. From what I've read, it looks like a little too much work for the time I have. So, as a project, putting a 3000 in a tower would probably be better in helping me eliminate some of the clutter in my tiny room and open up some space on my desk. Strange as it may seem, I prefer my 3000 to the 1200. Thanks for the replies, though.

Describe the clutter. What are you trying to eliminate?
Just where would you put this tower,  if you did the work?
Won\'t hide my location.

The usual, having the CDRom internally and an extra internal floppy with the CPU under the desk. Its a small desk, and the scanner and 3000 take up most of the surface. I don't have a camera, but you would probably be surprised at how much is crammed in such a small room.
