Getting PegII to boot from CD
« on: August 30, 2006, 07:05:56 PM »
I've just got my PegII and am setting it all up. I'm trying to get it to boot from the MorphOS 1.4.5 CD and not having much luck. When I type in "boot /pci/ide/cdrom boot.img" it hangs on a message saying "Quark/OpenFirmware".

If I type "ls /pci/ide/cdrom" then it lists the contents of the CD. I have tried another CD-ROM and another IDE cable. I don't know what else I can try :-(

I've just found a posting saying that this can happen if the graphics card is unsupported. I'm using a Radeon 8500, which I was told is supported. I tried it with my Voodoo 3000 from my A1200, and it did the same thing.

Do you use the right boot.img ?

I remember that, for the first time, I used the Peg1 boot.img. ( that was on my ODW - Peg2)

Sure you did (as that is for Peg1s.....).

Stupid question No.32:

Did you try to just power/reset with the CD inserted ?

Cos my Peg2 (ODW) autoboots the MOS-CDs.

Dunno why, dunno how, it's allways been that way .....

/me is of to check OF-variables.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

are you using 80-wire cables?

What PCI/AGP cards do you have inserted?

@Kronos
Yes I have tried cold booting with the CD in the drive.

@Crumb
I have tried two different 80 wire cables. I have tried an AGP Radeon 8500 and a PCI Voodoo 3000.

@motorollin
Do you have any USB devices plugged in? I just tried booting my PegII with the MOS CD and it wouldn't boot. But after unplugging my USB joypad it boots normal from CD.

No, I have a PS/2 keyboard and mouse connected, and the video cable in the graphics card. Nothing else is connected.

Type at the OpenFirmware prompt:

boot cd boot.img

Ensure MorphOS CD is inserted

The best you can try is connecting serial terminal to Pegasos and look into debug output... The worst I can imagine is that Pegasos is defunct... :/

Or humm... how is your harddrive?

@itix
I'll have a look for a serial cable. Do I just point a terminal emulator to the COM device  of the serial port and I will start seeing kernel debug output?

Yes, you'll see raw data list at 115200 bauds.
I've also a Pegasos2.
Are you sure you have well the MorphOS 1.4.5  (while booting you can see its label MORPHOS) ?
Do you have 1 or 2 Ram ? Use 1.
Try to boot with the Voodoo on the 1st PCI slot and nothing else on the other slots. Don't plug anything on the USB port !!!
Put your HDD alone on the primary IDE channel as master or slave (some brands don't like to be use in Master mode or with a CDROM)..

But :
Are you sure your HDD is really empty ?
Maybe you should try to get a Peg2 Debian and use its installer to clean the content.  :rtfm:

I also repair drives of our old beloved Amiga

My guess is your CD is FUBARed, try burning a new one .....

(but have a look at serial-out before)
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
