PowerVixxen LT accelerator board
« on: August 25, 2006, 03:57:11 PM »
Is it possible to know how the development of this is going on?

Does anyone know what ACK Software Controls is up to these days?

Does anyone have contact with Adam Kowalczyk, or does he come here often?

Is it true that the only thing holding of the release of this board is AOS4.0?

I question this because a see some market to these boards and wonderful possibilities. I'll be a shame to see that is just vaporware. Again.

The best answer i've found to these two questions is "Hang out on irc.amigaworld.net #amigaworld, because he pops in and answers questions occasionally".

I see him in the OS4 betatester IRC channel occasionally.

AFAIK the LT only boots linux at the moment (and thats not because Adam doesn't have OS4; AFAIK he has full CVS access to the OS4 codebase), so I guess he has to get OS4 booting...

Ok, and what should one do? Buy a Blizzard PPC or wait for a PowerVixxem when it comes out? The price on those Blizzard PPC can scale really fast on eBay. On the other hand, PV is not out yet...

Questions, questions. So little choices so little money...

Well, if your goal is to run OS4 then neither of those is options will work. If you insist on running OS4, then you have to find an AmigaOne.

@ motorollin

AFAIK OS4 runs fine on classic on blizzrdppc, unless all the beta testers have been lying

I didn't say it won't run on it. I just said that if he wants to run it he will need an A1.

@Motorollin

If Hyperion agrees to have a prerelease of AmigaOS 4 for the Powervixxen LT and TL the same way they did with the AmigaOne series, they can certainly do that.

Considering that there are few other options, and that Adam Kowalcyk (sp?) is an AmigaOS 4 developer, I'd say that it's very likely indeed!

Sorry if I've misunderstood, but wouldn't Amiga Inc. also have to agree? I'm sure that Hyperion would have happily made OS4 available for existing PPC hardware (eg. Macs) if it were that simple.

@ motorollin

not true.  if he wants to run it he could get a blizzard ppc and run os4 on that.   Unless of course you mean if he gets hold of A1 he can get a pre-release of os4 with it

@Maffoo

Hyperion is already authorized to sell the Classic Amiga version of AmigaOS 4 becuase the owner paid the licence for AmigaOS when they originally bought their Amiga.  Secondly, for the Mac to get a version of AmigaOS 4 then Apple would have to apply for an Amiga licence for a Mac version of AmigaOS 4.  As was stated earlier, the owner of ACK Software Controls is an AmigaOS 4 developer and has the ear of Amiga, Inc. and therefore is very likely to be able to get a licence for the PowerVixxen TL stand-alone system.

Considering that Hyperion have yet to even see a prototype of the PV, and considering that ACK hasn't even yet applied for a license, never mind been given one, I'd say the chances are less than 1 in 50 that there will be a Powervixxen-powered Amiga running OS4 within 2 years.  Heck it took longer than that to get it running on AmigaOne, even with the license and the full focus of the OS4 team.

No.  This is a common myth.  Hyperion is authorised to produce OS4 for AmigaOne, and CyberStormPPC-equipped devices.  Nothing else.  Just because it plugs into an A1200 doesn't mean it is exempt from the licensing requirements.  If that were the case, a $5 A1200 trapdoor -> PCI slot ribbon adapter would automatically give the Pegasos II  and PowerMac G4 an OS4 license.

Fleecy stated quite emphatically (in the only public  post Amiga have ever made regarding licensing requirements) that a system must be available and selling in quantities that constitute a business opportunity for Amiga Inc before they will even consider a request for an Amiga OS license.  There was nothing in Fleecy's post to the effect of 'unless you worked on OS4'.  If Amiga Inc doesn't see the potential for profit, they won't grant a license, no matter if it's Adam, Fleecy's favourite niece, or whoever.

And who can blame them?  They're a business.  Businesses exist to make money.
