Aminet question. . .
« on: August 23, 2006, 11:33:25 PM »
Hi all,
Kinda an off the wall question, but is it possible to download the entire Aminet site in chunks; I.E. - All games, all graphics programs, etc, etc. And if I do so, can I burn it to my DVD/CD player on my PC and use it on my Amiga cd player? Also, as far as I can tell from shopping around on E-Bay and Softhut, there are no more Aminet Sets past #12 ?! Is that so?
Thanks as usual.

If you use the proper Rock Ridge extensions to get the filenames to appear correctly on the Amiga, it will work.  Windows uses another extension by default so you may have to be a bit choosey about your CD-Burning software.

It wouldn't surprise me.

I'm one of the Aminet admins. Don't do that, please - it's considered abuse by the Aminet team.

Aminet currently has a size of 32 GB. Single users downloading that much data from our servers just to "have their own copy of Aminet" are actually threatening Aminet's existence, or at least its open nature. Not to mention that it's not exactly polite to create that much traffic for a university, non-profit organisation or friendly individual hosting Aminet *for free*.

There is no need to download Aminet, it's not going to die anytime soon. Even when we lost our mainserver in 2004, there were still seven complete mirrors all around the world. And loosing the main server is no issue anymore, as three of the Aminet servers are now *owned* by Aminet team members.

This question seems to pop up everywhere recently, I guess we have to address this with a public statement real soon.

Since you're an admin, can you tell of any ADT search sites still available (ie for use with AmFTP, and other ADT tools)?

If it's becomming a popular demand, maybe you could sell a DVD set to interested parties.  Could be done in a not for profit way, but could recover some hosting costs.  Would that be in conflict with the Aminet chater (if there is one)?  Maybe it would be too much work.

Also, much thanks to you and all the other people involved with Aminet: brilliant service you are providing.
Good good study, day day up!

Simply configure AmFTP to use "aminet.net" as the ADTFind server.

Let's just say that this might happen one day ;). It's an extreme amount of work though, and needs to be prepared pretty thouroughly.

Yes. Aminet have never been so good before! And we thought that it will never come back after the big crash. :-)
