4000T does not complete boot sequence
« on: August 14, 2006, 02:13:11 PM »
This is a weird one. I have a 4000T with 3.1 ROMs. Aside from the floppy drive and CPU card, nothing else is plugged into it. When I turn on the computer it asks for a floppy disk. So I insert a 3.1 disk and the boot process progresses. But it halts when the "Workbench Screen" menubar appears. The red mouse cursor is present and I can move it around but that is it. There are no icons and no usable menuts. I have tried other CPU cards, other boot disks (booth Workbench and Installer.. 2.1, 3.0, 3.1), and so forth. I cannot get it to boot completely.

Maybe the 4000T's boot sequence is different but if it starts booting the OS I figure it has passed all of its tests.

Can anyone offer some help?! :)

If the workbench doesn't load complete you have the wrong disks. Remember the A4kT has no workbench.library in ROM so it needs to be on disk. Thats why the a4kT has its own 3.1 disks.

Possibly the 3.1 disk you're booting off, is missing workbench.library. The latter is present in all amiga's roms, except in the A4000T's (for space considerations).

Edit: Damn, too slow  :-D
Anyway is the only way

If you've got Doobrey's RomSplit tool you can get workbench.library out of another 3.1 ROM and copy it to your 4000T's Workbench floppy.

Okay, I am going to ask this.... Does anyone have a set of 4000T disks they could make into .adf or .dms images for me? I bought this 4000T and it did not come with disks. I do have about 20 legit copies of AmigaOS from version 1.1 to 3.9 so I would not really be pirating it. I would be in your debt. :)

I can provide a 3.1 disk set but they would be HD disks. So if you have a HD Floppy just send me a PM.

Hmmm how do I get the workbench.library file onto the Install disk? There isn't enough room!

Got OS3.5? Got a CD drive? Copy workbench.library to a Workbench disk, boot from that, and Install 3.1 from the 3.5 CD. Then copy workbench.library to Libs:.

yeah, exept the disk he would boot from MUST be able to mount the CDROM... tricky tricky tricky... I can see why you need HD discs to do that.  do you have the HD floppy?  I don think the escom model ship with them?

Use an additional disk called libs or move something else to another floppy that the system looks after?

Well I'm sure the file will fit if you remove something else. It was on the original A4000 Workbench disks, so they must have been missing something to make room. How about this:

1. Boot with no startup-sequence
2. Move some unneeded prefs programmes to another disk to make some room
3. Copy workbench.library on to the Workbench disk
4. Reboot and Workbench should work
5. Mount your CD-ROM
6. Install OS3.5

That's my point. There isn't enough room on the Workbench disk for the library.

A kind soul was generous enough to send me some original Commodore HD 4000T 3.1 disks in DMS format. I will download them to my 4000D today and create floppies off of them. :) I have a HD floppy drive I can put in the 4000T.

A3500 is the prototype for the A3000T. About 20 made.
