Amiga 4000 AGA issues
« on: August 13, 2006, 01:07:39 AM »
        Hello guys,

I've been trying some games in my A4000, but some of them didn't work right.
I remember hearing all my life that A4000s have some incompatibility problems, with some AGA stuff, but i'm relatively new to the A4000 realm.
I remember of two games and an emulator that have problems in my system: Alien Breed 3D (WHDLoad installed - The dashboard with ammunition and energy meters doesn't appear), Xtreme Racing (Installed from floppies with the original install script - In the game menu, can't see any of the options and the in game screen doesn't appear), and finally AmiMSX (can't run any MSX2 games. They appear with vertical stripes, and all the sprites are missing. Some MSX1 stuff don't work too).
The worst of them to me is the XTR, as i really want to play this game.
I tried to boot with no startup sequence, and the problem happens anyway.
All this stuff seems to run fine in an A1200 (using the same HD).
Do someone knows if there's some patch or something that can improve A4000 AGA compatibility ?

    Thanks.

For non WHDLoad games get tude, no4060, degrader and embedder.  These tools will allow you to play a lot of games on your A4000!  Note:  you don't need all of these tools, you can just try one at a time and see if you can get the games working.  I have got XTR running on my A4000 before.

Hey TjLaZer, thank you for your input.

Unfortunately, i've tried all the programs you sugested, but the results are the same.

XTR still don't work. In the game menu i can only see the buttons with the main options, but the words with the sub options that should be on the center of the screen, are not there. Also, if i manage to start the game, i have vertical stripes and GFX corruption in the game. Desite that, i can still play the game, but it's annoying . . .

I remember that other games have the same issues. Even WHDLoad ones, like Banshee, that instead the left panel with info about the game, gives me a garbage panel.

I'm wondering if any of my hardware can cause that ?

I do have a CPPC, Mediator 4000D, with Voodoo3 and Realtek Ethernet (but i really doubt that any PCI card could cause it), a CVision and a Video Toaster 4000.

I do not have any onboard FastRam. Only the 2MB Chip and the 128MB Fast on the Cyberstorm.

Any help will be very much appreciated. I'm feeling like i'm gonna miss my former A1200T Mediator BPPC system

Is your TCP/IP stack loaded when you run the games?

Keep in mind most games only run in PAL, try embedder to run them in PAL.  I would say WHDLoad is the way to go for your setup.  It is unrealistic to expect your monster setup to play older games really.

Hey Motorollin,

I'm aware of the problem with TCP/IP stacks, mainly with WHDLoad games, so i always quit Miami before i try any games.

When i forget the game "dies" after some minutes, althought the music keeps going on :-)

But i never had GFX Corruption because of that . . .

Thanks for your input !

Much to my dismay :-)

Hey TjLaZer,

I'm aware too of the fact that most games are PAL, and it's the first thing i try when i get into trouble.

I really prefer WHDLoad anytime ! I haven't checked yet if XTR have a WHDLoad install, but by my experience, i can say it will not solve my problem. As i've told before, there are some WHDLoad games that gives me the same GFX corruption. But even so i admit that WHDLoad gives me far more control than any standalone degrader.

But regarding the unrealistic factor you had mentioned, i agree with you to some extent. But at least the WHDLoad stuff should work, i think.

It's something related to my machine, for sure. And i think it's innerent to the A4000 hardware, as i used to have a very close A1200 setup, and never had such problems.

Unfortunately i have no 030 or 040 CPU module to try on my A4000 instead of my CPPC. But i'll try to remove my Mediator, and see if something changes.

Thanks guys, for the help so far !
