Relegated Amiga!

I was sitting here wondering how many other Amigians are like myself?  I've spend Hundreds of £'s on my amiga building the system, I've always wanted with Mediator,BPPC etc etc . Now my Amiga finds itself sitting in the loft never getting used and I find myself using amikit on my PC for my Amiga cravings! So I was thinking surely I can't be the only person who's done this :-?

Where do I begin? :-)

I've got the following:

A1200 in Power Tower with BPPC 603e+ 060/210Mhz, 3.1 roms, 128MB Fast ram, Grex1200 PCI, Voodoo 3, Ethernet, Sound.

A1200 in D-Box 1200 Tower with BPPC 603e+ 060/240Mhz, 3.1 roms, 192MB Fast ram, MediatorSX 1200 PCI, Voodoo 3, Ethernet, Sound, Spider2 USB.

A4000D with CSPPC 060/233Mhz, 3.1 roms, 128MB Fast ram, Buster 11, Grex4000G, Voodoo 3, Ethernet, Sound, Spider2 USB.

Amiga 3000D with A3640 rev 3.2, 3.1 roms, 16MB Fast ram, Buster 11, DMAC 4, Ramsey 7, WD SCSI 8

Amiga 2000 with Blizzard 2060, 3.1 rom, 128MB Fast ram, Picasso IV, Delfina ZII light, Ariadne Ethernet

Amiga 500+ with Ematrix 530, 128MB Fast ram, 3.1 rom, internal 2.5 30 GB Hard drive.

Only one system gets used regularly, but it was sure fun to tinker around with assembling all of them and stuff.

I also have expansions all over the place which could probably almost duplicate my existing upgraded collection, that is if I bought a stock A500, A2000, A1200, A3000, and A4000D. :-D

i think almost all of us like tinkering
some things are easier or better under emulation. you can change an emulated amigas cpu, memory, os etc with just a couple clicks, not so easy with a real amiga sometimes.

The only Amiga I used extensively was A500 and some 15 years ago. I wish I had more time, will and patience to learn to fully use  A4000 and all those OS, its patches and utils, not just WHDLoad..

used my amiga 500+ purely for gaming. bought an a1200 just to be able to say i have one. wanted to make my a1200 into something more by adding internet access and what not, saw that software was difficult to get a hold of, saw that it needed better hardware, looked at the prices for hardware, and subsequently buggered off from any thought of upgrading my 1200

My A1200 is heavily upgraded and cost a lot of money. What with relationship, pets, house and work, it's hard to make time to actually use my Amiga. Even so, I try to set aside some "Miggy Time" at weekends when I can.

I only turn on my Classic Amigas once in a while to make sure they still work (they do).

I would like to set up my A500 with a large HD and WHLOAD to make it a super Retro game machine and hook it up to my 26" TV for my 8-year old son to see what video games used to look like.

I also have WinUAE (AmigaForever2005). I am still amazed at how compatible it is both for WB1.3 as well as 3.1/3.9. It has great custom chip emulation, especially Paula, for my music apps.

The Amiga I use most nowadays is my Amithlon, for surfing, tinkering, writing, networking. I use it at least once a day. It's as fun as my first A1000 nearly 20 years ago.

I go though phases.... life and work take lots of time to start with.  Sometimes my amigas get LOTS of attention, every day for months.. then I get interested in something else, like SGI gear.  I am for sure realy into setting them up..but I am getting into some cool apps and have been using the toaster/flyer I built over my flame at times.  the flyer is very usable.  I also like the dps par for animation playback (sound is the issue) I even used it to make a demoreel a few years back....  It's good to try to make them usefull, network card, scandoublers make a world of difference....  I get to use top of the line FAST computers (all kinds all day at work) so I don't mind slowing down once I get home....

I know what you are talking about.

First I got a A1200, then harddrive, then turbo board.

Then I needed an A4000, with 060, and then Cv643d, and then a lot of other Zorro cards, and then I needed an Elbox tower that cost the same as a low end PC. Then when I had the finished Amiga I thought it was sad to just let it sit on my shelf because I never used it so I sold it.

Goto 10 three times and repeat the process again but replace A4000 with A3000 and 060 with 040 (you get the idea), and you have my current Amiga situation, hardware just keeps on going whenever they end up in my house.

Its like there is a magic force, no matter how much I want to quit, something just pulls me back, omfg.

Hehe I had that with my 1200. Bought a turboboard and tower and stuff... Then I figured out I really wanted a 4000. Sold some 1200 parts and now the rest and I made myself a promise that I'll never sell my 4000!!

I have spent to much money on my Amiga setup to let it just stay collecting dust.
I use AmiKit as I am now, but mostly I like to use my Amiga 1200 for AmosPro and games amongst other things.
Its ok to have something like AmiKit if you want speed, but you cant beat the real thing.
I cant see me getting rid of what I have, I have spent to much to do that, and apart from that its the simple fact its an Amiga and not an emulated one.

How many hours have I spent on my real Amiga over the years (lost count)
But I have had more fun on my real Amiga that I ever have on one thats emulated.

Had an A500 and A1200, upgraded the 1200 a bit, used it for a year or so, then didnt for a long time - so put it away.  A couple of years later a friend was looking for an A1200 so I sold all my Amiga stuff to him.

To be honest, I'm relieved!  I always felt a bit guilty about not using my Amigas after spending so much time and money on them.

Moved on to PC hardware, I have several (five!) systems running a variety of; XP, Ubuntu, AROS, WinUAE with AIAB and Arcade and Vintage computer emulation till the cows come home.  

Its plenty to keep me going.

I feel somewhat like pierre and coldfish.  In fact, I just a few weeks ago pulled my A4000 off the shelf where it has sat since my move on January 1!  Before that I used it almost daily, playing, tinkering, and the like.

For me, Amiga has become an intense hobby, a labor of love.  Some people futz with cars, collect baseball cards or comics.  I exercise mentally by maintaining and using my Amigas.  I'm working to get into programming on the Amiga, having recently purchased SAS C and RKMs and development CD.

Aside from my Amigas, I also collect and maintain working classic video gaming systems, Atari 2600, 5200, and 7800, Sega CD, NES, ColecoVision, as well as TI-99/4A and Commodore 64/128 systems.  I still enjoy programming BASIC and assembler on the TI and C64, and I'm learning how to do more with the 128 (including porting my old C64 BBS software to the 128.)

I want my Amiga hardware to do more.  Even with its limitations, I prefer my Amiga to my Windows XP desktop, with my Solaris/Gnome system falling somewhere in between.

I'm buying a house in the next month, and I'm planning my new computer room and office around my Amiga systems (pathetic, eh?)  Shoot, with Remote Desktop I don't even have to have my XP workstation connected to anything other than the network -- this works well since I don't game or watch movies on the PC, I only use productivity software.

One day I want to call ComCast out to hook up cable Internet and point them at my A4000. hehehhe

I find myself tinkering around with my 1200 from time to time. It's quite heavily upgraded and a very nice machine, but I have to divide my attention between my C64/C128, my CBM8032-SK and my A1200 and A3000 (apart from keeping my pc network running, ofcourse). All in all, I can't give enough attention to any of the machines but as they are all in one room and ready to be switched anytime I want, it's te best I can do. Ah well, nostalgia is a great hobby! :-)
