How to make an Amiga a super Amiga
« on: August 08, 2006, 11:31:45 AM »
No, this is a serious quest.

I rediscovered my miggy as a programable machine, not as a piece of toy (although I like to play some games)

I have an Amiga 1200 with internal 245MB HD and an external 170MB SCSI. I have a Blizzard 1230 Phase IV with 64MB + Scsi.

What should or can I do with this hardware equipment.
Flashlab explained me that 4 GB is possible on this Miggy, but where can I can Scsi (or fitable on this amiga) Harddisks?

How to expand memory is already explain, but has got some?
I think I have a standard kickrom, but how can I change that to upgrade possibility's?

How to make a super Amiga out of mine?

Any suggestion (not to expansive please!)

I know it depense on what I want to do with it, I am just currious!

You could set it up as a games machine

If you have Kickstart 3.1 you can install AmigaOS 3.5 or 3.9 .   They have some extra eye candy and the functionality to install greater than 4 Gb hard drives.  There is also a driver for AmigaOS 3.1 that will let you do this but I'm not sure if it will work with Kickstart 3.0 .

Nope on CD-ROM and not free...

Second hand Kickstart Roms are a lot cheaper.

@ElZorro

There is Lots you can Do to upgrade your Amiga 1200:

1) add USB ports with the SUBWAY USB from AmigaKIt
2) add internal Laptop DVDRW/CDRW drive
3) add 80 Gigabyte Harddrive (yes you can read all of it)
4) add 128mb or 256mb if your Accelerator supports is
5) add a Wireless PCMCIA card in the Card slot
6) Add a Compact FLash adaptor internally to the IDE chain
7) Upgrade to OS3.9 (I prefer OS3.1)
8) Get a Genlock if you want to Do Video
9) Add a Coclino PS/2 Mouse adaptor to use Optical PC mice
10) Get SCALA MM300 or MM400  (Powerpoint for the Amiga)
11) Get DSS8+  Digital Sound Studio 8bit Sound Sampler
12) get a PC power supply and convert it for your A1200
13) Get AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo, and MSN and AmIRC
14) Get Brilliance 2.0 Paint package
15) Get a Motorola 68060 accelerator if you can!
16) Even better, get a PowerPC/68060 and use OS4.0 and Linux

And so much more you can do!    I say a DVDRW/CDRW jus so that you have the maximum possible upgrade incase you want to burn CD's in the Future (Burn It, MakeCD, Frying Pan, Master Iso)  are available Burning software for Amiga
CD32 is actually the best Amiga ever made by Commodore!...

Dear Leirbag,

I was overwelmed with this list.
I will so lonely with the standard A1200 like I have.
It feels like having a PC like 386 DX 66 and thinking it supports a lot!
Time stood still. Likewise my Miggy!

I will start saving money and time!
Video editing is not my thing.
I like to make music!
So which additorials remain?

You can get OS3.9 from AmigaKit or Vesalia too, but...

You need a CD-ROM drive for OS3.9! It can be installed without one too but you need to know what you're doing then; it's not for novices. I think AmigaKit sells harddisks that have OS3.9 preinstalled.

@ElZorro

First think of what you want to do with your Amiga. Make a small list. A lot of upgrades don't make any sense if you're not going to use them. It's IMHO just a waste of money.

You don't need OS3.5 or 3.9. You can upgrade 3.1 with a lot of patches from Aminet that give it the (nearly) same functionality.

You already have a nice machine that can be used to make music and play all those classic games! All you need is a big bigger HD. That's why I said to get a HD that isn't bigger than 4Gb (4Gb should be more than enough). That way you have enough space and you don't get into trouble with the 4Gb limit.

I will meditate about a whish list of things I wanne do with Miggy.

Thanks Flashlab.

With my Scsi kit on my Blizzard I'll be able to connect a 4GB harddisk, right?

I have this Cable from the back of my Amiga (scsi) to a bigger (looks like the old parallel) connector. That is attached to a SCSI box. In it there is my ext. HD. In there the connectors has less pins than a usual PC HD.( So it is Scsi, right? Not IDE or AT mention in advertisments.)

oh, dear, I think I have to make photo's to explain better!

@ElZorro

Dont worry about the length of the list.........these are just in My opinion the first Priorities.

But as it is.You have an Excellent machine right now!  My Amiga is 68030 as well..........and it does lots!

All you need is OS3.1 or 3.9, and a Harddrive bigger than 4gig..although 4 gig will do you just fine and last a while.

For Music I would say get a Midi Interface, Digital SOund Studio 8+ for sound sampling, ProTracker, Octamed SOund STudio, MusicX, Bar N Pipes Professional.
and your good. You can alway later upgrade to a 16bit SOund Card too!

to Effy:
The 128Mb modules, nice!

"U heeft daar een goede uitstalling van gemaakt! Amai!"

You added a long list of information!
But that is not what I need, I guess.
Flashlab explained me that being satisfied and thinking about the acual use of the miggy will give a good feeling.

More memory is still the thing that keeping me bussy.
I have the Blizzard 1230 and A1200 Power told me that it is faster than a standard. (so I have something more than usually). The external features can be used for other hardware (SCSI) where to finf a HD which I can connect to my SCSI-kit of this blizzard? Or an internal one bigger than 240 MB?

I learn more about the a1200, so keep me informed.

Greetings,
Frisby
