Harddisk install problems
« on: August 05, 2006, 01:33:46 PM »
Hi,

I own an Amiga 1200 and want to install a 4,3 Gb Harddisk on my Amiga 1200. The problem is: my Amiga doesn't recognise it, so I can't format it with HDToolbox. In fact, none of the software recognises it.

It's an 2,5" IBM Harddisk and when I connect the IDE-cable I can hear it's running.

Can anyone help me out?

Hum,
unrecognised even with a Soft reboot?

Have you connected the cables correctly (red goes to pin one -  there is a `last resort` option to cut that cable)

Try an older version of HDToolbox, and see if that works.

I've tried what you told me to do.

My Amiga doesn't recognise the harddisk when I double-click at the boot-up sequence. It only shows me the DF0 and CC0 drives.

When I use HDToolbox it says it's a SCSI-drive, but it isn't.

Here are the harddisk specs:

4,3 Gb, IBM ATA/IDE, 4200 RPM

The cable is properly connected. The harddisk also sounds like it's working.

I already had a 60 MB harddisk in my Amiga 1200 and it worked fine, so the cable is ok.

So it does see it. Just continue. The IDE driver is called scsi.device and it understands some SCSI commands. That's completely normal. HDToolbox treats all drives as SCSI.

Bye,
Thomas

Thanks for the reply.

Now HDToolbox only asks me to low-level format.
I heard that could damage your harddisk? (When I choose this option it doesn't do anything at all.)

I have tried to verify the drive, that works fine. When I want to save changes HDToolbox says: "Error-1 on write".

Could it possibly be that this problem is caused because the harddisk is used as a PC Laptop harddisk, and is pc-formatted?

Hum,
low-level formating will break the HD (Only fixed by putting it into a PC).

Dont do it.

btw, On the Workbench screen there is no new icon that appears (NDOS:) ?

HDToolbox won't save the changes to my HD, I can't mount it and can't format it.
It shows me the error "Error -1 on write" when I try to save the changes.

What am I doing wrong and how can I possibly format this hard drive?  :-?

It is now PC-formatted, because the drive comes from a laptop. I want it to work on my Amiga 1200.

Anyone?

Hum,
i usually format the Amiga HD from the Workbench menu.

(Click on the HD icon that appears, and choose format from the WB menu).

It doesn't show the icon on workbench, in fact only HDToolbox recognises it, but gives a write error when I try to saves the changes.

I can't even partition it.

Try starting over. Do the whole Change Drive Type initialization again. As soon as that's done, save the changes to the drive and reboot - don't do anything else. Once you're rebooted, partition the drive, save the changes, and reboot again. Then format your partitions from Workbench.

The 'Modify Bad Block List', 'Low-Level Format', and 'Verify Data On Drive' options should almost never be used.

I tried, but it still gives me the "Error -1 on write" message.  :-o

I'm using HDToolbox 3.0 by the way.

www.aminet.net/hdinst.lha (V6.9) etc

(Other tips can be found here)

This program says the harddisk is unsupported. What to do next?

Problems are solved! Sometimes my creative mind scares me haha!

I've replaced the FastFileSystem file on my Workbench Install Disk (the one with HDToolbox on it) with the one from OS 3.5 (a newer one).

This did the trick for me. Now HDToolbox saved the info to the hard drive and didn't give me the "Error -1 on write" message.

The hard drive is now recognised by Workbench and I'm able to format it! Yay!  :-)
