Picture browser & makedir from ASL
« on: May 10, 2003, 03:12:46 PM »
There are two things in Windows that I miss on my Amiga:

- A picture browser like (can't remember its name) that
allows to browse pictures forth and back using cursor keys

- an addon (or a replacement) for ASL requester with
a "create directory" button.

Any hint?

Do you mean the built-in image viewer?  I cannot find any software on aminet  that would do it, but it would probably be stupidly easy to program (and more powerful, because of datatypes) :-)

Why have a button when you can just type
the dir in and ASL creates it for you ?

I was referring to ACDSee, a neat program.
Maybe some of the GUIs for Visage could do the job,
otherwise it would be simple to add such a
function to an existing GUI.

Argghh, I've also just became a victim of the double post
syndrom! But it's not my fault, AWeb have done it!
God knows why :-?

It's true! :-O
I've missed this feature fro many years, without ever knowing it
existed. But it's not perfect: an annonying requester
pops up and asks to confirm the action :-)

Please have a look at http://picshow.1st.to. It's not ACDSee though.

I've installed it and it looks like it's what I was searching for.
I don't need all the functions in ACDSee, just the ones
that make pictures browsing more confortable.

Sadly, on my system I cannot make it work. I've installed it
thru Installer, I've installed also jpeg.library since
it seems it needs it, using the SCREEN tooltype it opens
a black screens and it asks for a file. After choosing
it, nothing happens, I'm stuck with the black screen and
I can't even run again the program. I've also raised
the stack to 100000. Does it requires CGX or P96?
I'm using a 1200 with 030/50 and OS 3.0, no gfx board.

Then select Create Drawer... from the Project menu instead. (or whatever the first menu on the ASL requester is)

Nothing should be needed that is not part of the AmigaOS distribution. Especially jpeg.lib, P96 or CGX are *not* needed. They are used if present, though. Large stack also is only needed for the PPC version. But it does not harm.

I didn't yet test with 3.0, maybe it needs something special to 3.1. How much memory do you have ?

What kind of picture do you want to view ? Please try it with a small picture that shows well in Multiview. And please try it first without any parameter but the file name.

Bye,
Thomas

IIRC, MysticView has features similar to ACDSee. It's shareware though.

If you're looking for a thumbnail based picture browser PhotoAlbum by Helmut Hoffmann is a good option. It can generate thumbnails of images in a directory and optionally sub-directories. You can then browse through them and view the full image in a pop-up window. It is quite configurable and is significantly faster than other similar programs I have tried. I think this is because it has built-in support for many image format rather than relying on datatypes.

I have a button configured in Opus so I can open a PhotoAlbum window showing the images in a directory with one click. Options then allow you to delete images, load them into external programs etc.

PhotoAlbum is shareware and comes with a very nice picture viewer called Cybershow.

You can download demo versions fron the
PhotoAlbum  website.
