Where to buy 80mhz 68060 cpu with full fpu and mmu?
« on: July 28, 2006, 01:57:43 AM »
Im thinking about buying a voltage regulator for my Apollo1240 and then paying someone to solder on an 060.

The only 060's ive seen for sale are just under 20 quid but have no mmu or fpu. Are these worth buying? Is there anywhere to get one with full mmu and fpu?

What I need is a MC68060RC50 I think

Thanks

forget about replacing your self the 040 of your apollo
you will damage your card and cpus unless you a have special tools to made that
anyways also you need a new crystal and a 3v3 volt circuit to make a 060 works there
maybe you are lucky and you found a 060 and a crystal..but where you will found the 3.3 volt circuit?

enjoy your turboboard and forget the fantasy

Kay, I don't know about Apollo boards, but it is as I understand possible to replace an 040 with 060 on many turboboards (dunno if it's as complicated as Laser makes out, but then his posts so far rarely make sense to me)

Anyway, to answer your question, there's no such thing as an 80MHz 68060, the only go up to 50MHz. Of course you can overclock, (with the usual warnings - make sure you have adequate cooling and expect lowered reliability) and I've read of people using 060s clocked anywhere up to ~100MHz (from what I've read it's usually the Atari folks who get silly fast speeds).

Of course you could pay the manufacturers Freescale to develop a faster 060. :-P

Ok laser. I already have the the volatge regulator and you can buy crystals from anywhere for under £1.

All I need is the 68060 cpu which ive seen for sale on ebay uk in the past but may take some time tracking down.

And of course I would not change the cpu myself I would pay AmigaCentre or any other electronics firm to do it for me.

You make out as if its impossible.

IIRC the Apollo will need a reflash as well.

Contact AmigaFR before. (above all about the price)

i'm not 100% sure... ask to AmigaFR ;-)

Edit- do you have a 68040.library in Libs?

I have just emailed Amiga Center France about upgrading it and also maybe adding a 2nd SIMM socket.

According to my Apollo 1240/1260 manual when using a 68060 cpu you use the install disk and it makes adjustments to the 68040.library or something like that.

Just bought the Apollo made voltage regualtor for £12 as I doubt they will show up on ebay again anytime soon.

smiley,

ok...a 50 mhz crystal is not a problem
if you have the apollo 1240/25 mhz you can use that crystal

but

from where you got that 3.3 volt module?
is that an original module of an apollo 1260 board?
do you know exactly where solder that?

please note that not any 3.3 volts circuit will work there
the voltage must be exact and precise,
the original module is complex so
if that is not precise you can burn the 060 cpu or make your computer unstable on a horrible way

anyways good luck

but my recomendation is:

sell your apolo board and purchase a blizzard 1260
better card, you can add more memory than the apolo and even you can disconect the card pressing a key on every boot for very well know 060 compatibility reasons

I bought an original apollo volatge converter off ebay.

I got a reply from AmigaCenter:

Hello,

You also must got the Eprom or its file. I do not know how it could work without it, perhaps well, perhaps not.
After you just have to replace cpus and put jumpers in correct way ( clock, 040/060 ) and plug the 3.3 V small pcb.
I never do this job, so i cannot tell a price.
I think you can do by yourself.

Kind regards,

JJ B

I can easily pay someone to desolder and solder the cpu. The volatage regulator simply plugs in to the board. The only problem now is the eprom/file. Which looks extremely hard to find. Oh well

honestly i agree with Laser here. Make some maths and decide by yourself if its better to sell the Apollo040 and purchase a Blizzard060 (much faster DMA SCSI at least)

You need to reflash the EPROM aswell.
There is a guy in Sweden that does these upgrades on the Apollo 1240.

Yep, thats me.. :-)
Smiley1635, thank you for your purchase, PM is sent.

Let me straighten out some question marks:

Its very much possible to upgrade a Apollo 1240 to 1260 and i have everything needed for sale, new eprom with 1260 firmware, voltage regulator and cpu:s.
If anyone is interested PM or mail me.
The soldering is of course the biggest problem so its not exactly cheap.
But youll get a really fast 68060 accelerator, overclockable to 80Mhz with MC68060RC50, mask 1E41J and a cooler.
This cpu contains both a MMU and FPU.

I have also the extra SIMM holder and crystal oscillators, well almost everything for Apollo 1240/60 turbocards..
 :-)

And, the regulator is a Apollo original regulator.
I have the remaining stock.

My homepage with some pictures of a upgraded Apollo 1260, please click the link:

I don`t know how much PG charges for the upgrade, but usually the cheapest and sefest way to upgrade any 040 card is to sell it and buy a 060 card.

Not really interesting, but it`s there.

Upgrading a 040 card is not cheap, but you are missing the point.
With a upgraded 040 you get the best cpu available for the Amiga: MC68060RC50 with mask 1E41J.
Its not really fair to compare a XC68060 accelerator card with a card with this cpu.
