GVP 1230 Jaws? - For A1200
« on: May 09, 2003, 12:22:35 AM »
Got a GVP 1230 Jaws card in my 1200? Does anyone know what type of ram it takes and what the maximum it can take. I have 4mb (so workbench says!) on it but was wondering whether i could increase the memory. Does it require special memory or just ordinary pc memory and what is the max i can put in it? It has a spare slot for the memory but do not know what type it is.

Hello Frits (sounds Dutch?),

according to this and this it only accepts special GVP SIMMS. I think every piece of GVP hardware only accepts GVP SIMMS.

So I guess you have to organize a hunting posse for it :-).

Pulled the ram off the board and it says GVP on the back. So i guess i am stuck with it unless someone on this board has a 4mb module for sale(very cheap!). And i am English - Just my nickname!

You seem to be a very lucky man. sort of. I have a GVP 1230 with 4mb ram. the accerlerator is broken, never worked. so maybe the ram is aswell...you can have it I s'pose,  as it's no use to me.

But (and there is always a but) I won't be back in the UK for at least 3 months (possibly longer)...maybe someone at home can dig it out for you...

Hello Frits,

My old machine (now my Dad's) has the GVP Series II in it, with
20 MB Fast RAM (a 4MB and a 16MB SIMM).  It was always very
reliable for me.

Centsible Software (http://www.centsible.com) may still be selling
new GVP 16 MB SIMMS.

;-) One of my A500s is equipped with a GVP Impact! Series II SCSI controller / RAM expansion.  It uses 30 pin SIMMs, up to a maximum of eight megabytes.  I don’t recall seeing the GVP name on them.  I would recommend trying whatever type of RAM that you can borrow, or purchase cheaply.  A charity thrift store is good for such things.

If this is a proper GVP 1230 Jaws, then normal sims won't fit. It uses GVP 64 (or 68 I forget which) pin SIMS. I think power computing sells them for something stupid like 40 quid.
