First Vista, now Zune: Microsoft leaching Amiga names
« on: July 22, 2006, 06:25:29 AM »
I just read that the new Microsoft "iPod killer" is to be named "Zune" - which happens to be the name of the AROS version of MUI. This comes after hearing that the next version of Windows is to be called "Vista" (name of Amiga 3D landscape program). It's so tragic thinking that these names are about to be poisoned forever by association with Microsoft. Even Wikipedia has been changed to say Zune is a new Microsoft device instead of the AROS MUI info it had before.

What's next - a new MS tool called "Workbench" and a new Xbox called "Amiga"?

Suspicious? Yes. Intentional? Maybe. Possible to prove? No chance.

Even if the AROS team does have a legal claim to Zune (do they? is it possible to trademark something under GPL?), Microsoft would bury them in years of litigation before they ever got to a courtroom. Such is the luxury of being a monopoly...

You are paranoid. There is a sample editor SoundFX which is not the same SoundFX I know from late 80s (both on Amiga) and if you google a little you'll find many more references to SoundFX.
My Amigas: A500, Mac Mini and PowerBook

Whatever was there in reference to Amiga is now gone, and the Zune article is locked due to "vandalism" by anonymous and/or newly registered accounts.

Personally, I stopped using Wikipaedia a long time ago.  I hate to say this, but the social experiment it was has failed.  People have too many personal, political, or religious agendas for such a project to succeed.  There will never be a fair approach to the recording of information so long as humans are recording it.  History proves this over and over, and this manifests in nearly every historical document ever produced, from the Bible, history of Egypt, revisionist histories of the home computer revolution, to events as recent as the first and second Guld Wars.

So long as people believe that if it's on the 'web it must be true, something like Wikipaedia will be nearly impossible  to fight to maintain fair and balanced recording.

A long time ago in the USA we had a product called Dominoes Pizza. They were sued by a company called "Dominoes Sugar". In the end Dominoes Pizza got to keep their name.

I get really tired of the constant hack on Microsoft thing here. If Zune wasn't properly registered then I don't see how they have a right to the name.

Microsoft isn't the big bad people some folks are making them out to be here.  Maybe they'll come out with an AROS pda next. Who knows, but do your homework folks, a name is fair game if it's not properly registered. Did Amiga.ORG have to get permission before creating this site based on defunct company..

-Don

PS a Zune player might give MUI some attention. My thoughts are no press is bad press anymore..

Bad example, as amiga.org has the permission (from old Amiga though, not the current one).

My point is not to say that it is illegal or wrong. My point is that I'm sad that these words will now be forever associated with the products of a company I hate. (...like how people with last name "Hitler" became forever associated with Adolph)

Of course the page got locked and Fatman's account got banned.  You can't just remove other peoples content and replace it with your own.

Wikipedia is a great resource.  It's fanatical editors like Fatman that are the problem.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

If I'm understanding this correctly, the page Zune on Wikipedia originally had information about the MUI re-implementation. That content is now gone, replaced with Microsoft's MP3 thingy. The page header refers people to the MUI page if they want info on Amiga Zune.

On that page, however, it directs people to the Zune page for more information on Amiga Zune (which is now gone).

So it appears as if some content has been lost in the editing frenzy. What should have been done was to turn the Zune page into a disambiguation page with links to the Amiga Zune content under a new name AND to Microsoft's player. Too late now. Maybe when everyone cools off this can be addressed.

But the problem is that this is exactly what has happened. Fatman was probably only changing it back to the orginal content.

Wikipedia is, an will always be biased.
I think that instead of allowing us to change or add information just like that, it should be proven wrong or not before allowed.
One example is the religious points of view concerning judas.
Now they have found facts that says it was not the way you learned at school.
To make it short.
It is sad that the Amiga is dissapearing from the media, but it is a fact.
Adults with imaginary friends are stupid

"Now they have found facts that says it was not the way you learned at school."

 Sorry couln't resist. Just how do you think it's possible to prove that the information on so aging documents is actually true ? One says one thing, other leads to believe another. Who will you belive ? There are things that can't be proven by logic or science.
