HELP - Apollo 4040/4060 information needed
« on: May 08, 2003, 06:05:42 AM »
Hello All,
Quick question.  I recently obtained an Apollo 4040-4060 board with a 040 installed and no manual.  I want to upgrade the board to an 060 but what do I need to do?
I know about the jumpers but what concerns me is the voltage to the 060 chip.  One web page said

Also the A3060 and A4060 contain a small PCB connected to the card which is a power converter designed to run the 060 at 3.3Volts. NEVER use the card without this installed you will run the 060 at 5V and kill it.

This may seem like a stupid question but how do I know if I have one installed?  There's a header underneath the CPU that say's "power converter".  It has some jumpers on installed on it.  Is this where that converter connects to?  Or do those jumpers do something for the voltage?

Any suggetions would be greatly appreciated!

The power converter is a small pcb that sits on top of those pins. On an 040 board, these pins are jumpered to make the 5v pass straight trough.

In order to upgrade to 68060 you will need:
-The power converter (most likely impossible to find)
-A new boot rom on the apollo (also impossible to find)

There's a website somewhere with unofficial apollo support. Try searching on google.

Note this: the scsi controller on the apollo is totally useless. If you need/want scsi, find yourself a cyberstorm instead (these are upgradable from 68040 to 68060, too)

Hello,
Thanks!  I was afraid to hear that.  I've been searching google and haven't been able to turn up much.  I could have sworn that SOMEWHERE in the 1000's of websites I have cataloged that I had come across a sight that mentioned a hack/mod to modify the board for the 3.3V but for the life of me I can't find it.
