Help with PCMCIA and Easy ADF Compact Flash
« on: July 17, 2006, 12:37:21 AM »
Hey Everybody,

Just got the PCMCIA adapter and 512 Kingston Compact Flash card from amigakit.com.  Here's the problem I"m having.  I installed the ADAPCMCFL and Easy ADF applications to the Hard Drive.  Rebooted and the compact flash showed up on the desktop.  Then, I formatted it on the amiga and renamed it.
Next I popped out the Compact Flash and ineserted it into a card reader for my Mac.  Showed up fine on the desktop so I dragged a .adf file onto it, ejected it and re-inserted back into the Amiga 600.  When I double click the CF icon, there are no files listed.  Same thing when I launch Easy ADF, it does not list any files in the window.  Do I need to name them something special for the Amiga to see them or did I screw up by formatting the Compact Flash on the Amiga?
Any help would be great, I'm trying to put .adf files back to Amiga disks to play.
Thanks!

The CF card shouldn't be Amiga formatted- theres no need to format it as it should stay as FAT formatted.

You can reformat it back in a PC or using FAT95 on the Amiga.

EasyADF has a cycle gadget (top right) which once clicked you can show all files, just adfs or just lha files on the CF card.  Sometimes PC and Mac's ADF file names are too long for the Amiga so they need to be renamed to a shorter name to show up on the Amiga correctly.  The Amiga can only read filenames that are 31 chars or less.  If they are longer than that, the filenames will be truncated.

@cleland909

Well, considering Mac can't read amiga FFS formatted media, it's no wonder you can't copy anything on the card.

Do what amigakit tells you to, reformat back to FAT...

also, you can't see the adf file unless you select "show all files" from the view menu in workbench. actually this counts for all files without icons. an icon is a .info file which you can see on the pc side when you copy a file with icon from the amiga.

OK, I formated it as "Fat" on my PC (Which I only keep for things I can't do on my mac).  Then I inserted the Compact Flash on my mac, and dragged a couple of .adf files over.  Inserted it into the Amiga 600 and same thing, nothing is listed in the Easy Adf, whether or not I click "Show All Files" or anything else.

And, yes the Mac can see everything fine, just not the amiga.

I guess I could try to transfer my .adf files to the PC and copy them from that??

Thanks for all the help and fast responses though!

Maybe i'm writing a barbarity since i'm pretty noob, but i did it like this:

Installed fat95 and cf and at the wb startup i added the cf "shortcut".

It works like a charm. I'm using a  transcend cf adapter and a 16 MB sandisk cf.

Hope u get it sorted out.

Cheers

The CF file + icon should live in sys:devs/dosdrivers.

Either way, it gets automatically started in wbstartup too, but for future's sake, dosdrivers is the correct place for it.

Well CountZero was right, If I select "Show All Files" from the view I can see the files on the CF, but Easy ADF still doesn't.  I'll check to Dos Drivers drawer when I get home.  But given it does show up on the desktop I would think it's there.
I'll tinker some more when I get home.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

Still no luck getting the compact flash to work with Easy ADF.  I notice that when I "view all files" they begin with the characters "_." then the file name.  I tried to rename the files but they won't do it.  Then I tried Easy ADF one more time and even though I can't see any files in the list, I tried to copy .adf to disk.  It listed a game (Maybe the first in the directory?).  I was not able to select anything so I just clicked to get to the next page and it comes up with "Software Error 0000"
or something like that.

Now I'm wondering if it might be the fact that I am using the Amiga 600 with the composite video out to a TV.  Do I need a monitor to view the text??  I have a 1080 I got off ebay on the way.
