CD_ROM will not mount
« on: July 16, 2006, 02:30:08 PM »
Hi, I have come back to the Amiga after many years of owning and using Amigas for mainly music. I started with a Amiga 500, then a 3000, to a 4000, where I took another direction.
Now , I have returned to a 4000 lately, but have some problems that I cannot seem to iron out.

The issue is that the system will not see the CD-ROM after I reformatted the hard drive with OS 3.1.
I purchased ASIMCDFS 3.1 and changed the CD-ROM even and still the system will not see the unit.
I have OS 3.9 to install, but as you see, this needs to be ironed out first.
I hope you knowledgeable folks can give me some insight as to what to try next.

It's good to be back!

Wolf

Hey Wolf,

You say that after the format the drive is not seen by os3.1 right? So it did work before, and is yes what did you use IDEFIX or IDEFIX '97.

Some also prefer AmiCDFS from aminet (no costs) I hope you have acces to that source in some way.

Never forget that the cdrom could also be broken wich may cause in to not mounting the cd.

Greetings Henk

If you're using the built in IDE on the A1200/A4000 you need an ATAPI driver (IDEFix, IDEMax, etc.).  You can use the IDEFix demo from Aminet and then replace it with the built in atapi.device in OS3.9 once you get things installed.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Hi Henk and thanks for replying!
When I bought the A4000 from a friend, it had a video toaster installed. I did not need or wish to buy the extra hardware, so he yanked the card. The CD-ROM did work at that point. When I took it home ,I found out that the CD-ROM did not work, so I bought OS3.1 thinking that a reformat would solve my problem. Not So!
I did try to install IDEFIX , but the installer (tool?)would not begin the installation. The OS3.1 and the ASIMCDFS3.1 did install with there installer because it ran off of the floppy disk. How do I get OS3.1 "installer"
to function correctly? Is there something I need to type in the start-up sequence?
Never had this problem on my old A3000   :-?

Hi adolescent,
I will try that(I'll try anything at this point!).
If I can get the OS3.1 "installer " to install, which has also been a problem.
Thanks for your reply and your help, I really appreciate it!

Wolf :-?

"Installer" is a standard program used to run installation scripts. It is contained on the Install3.1 disk but unfortunately not copied to HDD during OS installation. So copy it manually to Sys:C and to Sys:Utilities (different scripts expect Installer to be in one or the other location, so copy it to both), then the IDEfix installer will run.
There is a new version of Installer on Aminet which is to prefer: http://www.aminet.net/package.php?package=util/misc/Installer-43_3.lha
Again, copy the Installer program to both Sys:C and Sys:Utilities.

When the installer lets you select your CD-ROM drive, use scsi.device as driver, not atapi.device. Then you have less hassle when removing IDEfix later.

Bye,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
I really appreciate the reply.
That all makes sense now.
I think I can now get on with my "Amiga life".

Thanks so much,

Wolf

Hi Wolf, Welcome back to AO.

Wat did you do with the old Toaster card you pulled?

Regarding the CD drive not working did you check to make sure that the CD0 driver was located in the dos drivers drawer? this can be found in the storage folder.
Amiga 2000HD Indivision ECS
Amiga 4000D towerised OS 3.1 and 3.9 on CF cards
Indivision AGA, Mediator 4000
Video Toaster 4000 Flyer v4.3 Millenium.
202gig of video drive space & 5gig audio.

Hi Tony,
I bought the A4000 from a fellow by the name of Dan.
He pulled the board and might still have it. I think his web  site is www.dansdeals.net
He has always been very active in the Amiga community as long as I've known him. A good guy to deal with too!

The CD0: driver is installed in the dos drivers drawer, but I have not been able to get back to the Amiga and install IDEFIX yet.
I am pretty confident that the "Fix" will do the job. I had some good help getting me this far from some helpfull people on this board.

Cheers,
Wolf

IDEFix is not needed if you are using AsimCDFS, though it's important to clarify: Do you have Asim 3.1 or Asim 3.10? There's a big difference. Later branches of Asim 3.x definitely have a new driver for the 4000's built-in IDE port, but I'm not sure if 3.1 does.

The reason a new driver is needed is because the IDE driver in ROM - used by Workbench 3.1's default CD0 mountlist - doesn't support the ATAPI standards used by IDE CD drives. So you need a disk-based driver, and Asim has one. IDEFix offers another, but it gets a little messy when you upgrade to OS3.9 with the BoingBags.

The Asim installer should take care of everything for you. When it asks what kind of drive you're using, select ATAPI 1200/4000 (or similar). It'll offer to load SCSI Inquire to find your drive. Odds are it'll be asim_atapi.device, unit 1. Once Asim is installed, make sure your original Commodore CD0 mountlist is removed.

Hi Matt,thanks for reply!
I will look to see what exact version of ASIMCDFS I have.(I'm at work presently.)
When I installed the ASIMCDFS software (from floppy disk)
it hung up when it searched for scsi or atapi device.(had to reboot.)I re-installed the software and did not let it search for the devices and it loaded fine.  Although, it still hangs the system when searching for the devices.

Secoundly, the "install" tool was copied to the c: dir during the OS3.1 install, but when I tried to install IDEFIX97, " the install tool still would not perform the operation.

Do you think a system re-install is needed?

Wolf

"Install" is not what is needed, "Installer" is needed. "Install" writes a new boot block to a formatted floppy disk (same as "Sys" command on MS-DOS). "Installer" is the interpreter for installation scripts.
