Delfina in 1200
« on: July 13, 2006, 08:37:12 PM »
Hi all:

I have a Classic 1200 with 68030@50 and 68882@50. I'm planning to buy a Delfina sound card from amigakit.com
I want to know if CPU load is too high when you are playing an MP3, or delfina takes care of "all" processing. (i guess I/O from MP3 file, not). I mean, can i hear MP3 and work normally or i will get a high CPU utilization?.

Regards.

You'll need this, but otherwise you're correct - Delfina can take virtually the entire load off the CPU.

Im not sure, but i think delfina (and other cards too) does not have any MP3 DPS decoder, so you can play it 16bit/stereo , but load will be same as without any card.

IF you need to play MP3 with small cpu utilisation, try to lood for MAS MP3 player on paralel port. With 130/50 you will be able to play almost all MP rates without noticing it :)
too lazy to use shift key properly...

It would have taken less time to check the facts than write a post with false information ;)

Delfina DOES have a DSP and does the decoding..

Yeah. The Delfina's programmable DSP is its primary selling point :-)

Admittedly, the card isn't *dedicated* to decoding MP3, but it can do it.

Yes, you won't notice almost anything in CPU load with Delfina playing mp3. Just small usage depending which player you use (does it have gui etc).

And remember to disable all meters etc from player! They're just waste, because there won't be any data back from Delfina, which would be shown in those. I first wondered why Amplifier made some kind of CPU load when playing with Delfina, but then I noticed that having one scope selected it used it even when it didn't show anything.

Couple of programs:

http://de4.aminet.net/mus/play/DelfMPEG.lha
Standalone mp3 player for shell. ARexx and signal support, so you can make own guis or whatever.

http://de4.aminet.net/mus/play/dmdev.lha
mpeg.device compatible device for Delfina. Can be used with Amplifier, Frogger etc.

http://it.aminet.net/mus/play/mhimdev.lha
MHI driver for mpeg.device. Needed if you want to use AmigaAmp.

http://it.aminet.net/hard/misc/DelfTweak.lha
Overclocking utility, if you have older Delfina (like Lite or 1200) and have problems with high bitrate mp3 files.

http://it.aminet.net/util/misc/DelfInit.lha
Better initializing program. I don't know if it's needed nowadays still...

And get the latest delfina.library from Jens's page.

And if you still get some freezes with mp3 (usual with Delfina Lite card) then this helps http://jpv.wmhost.com/delflib_patch_2.lzx

Hey! wait a minute!

DSP56002 achieves 24-bit depth. Now, why delfina is only 16-bit depth?
