which monitor cable to use? (a1200 with 1084s)
« on: May 07, 2003, 04:52:51 AM »
Hey guys.
just a couple of quick questions;
I'm thinking of making a monitor cable for my 1084s monitor.  should I make it for the digital input or the linear input?
I'm currently using a composite video lead, will I get much improvement over using RGB anyway?
thanks guys

cant wait for os4!

You want to make an RGB cable. The difference is amazing!!

You just need to find the pin outs for each (I have them around here for the amiga side somewhere if you need them, but not for the monitor).

The RGB port on the Amiga has both digital and Analog Red Green and Blue signals off the 23 pin port.  Use the R,G,B analog signals not the digital ones :)  Also, if you can't find a 23 pin connector, you can just get a 25 pin one and grind off 2 pins from the end of it.  Not pretty, but it works.

Good luck.

I have the pinouts for the monitor and the amiga 3000.
is this the same for the a1200?

If it's for the 23 pin monitor output on the A3000, then you certainly can be assured it's the same thing. Remember though, that the A3000 had a builtin Amber card (flickerfixer) that had it's own 15 pin (VGA) output.

I can only find an 8 pin din plug for the digital connector on the monitor.
what happens if I use the amigas digital outputs here? do I only end up with 16 colours?
I'm gonna make the cable anyway and find out

I've found http://www.hardwarebook.net/ to be most usefull for making cables and converters of all kinds. There exist full diagrams for a few cables and pinouts for most connectors to create your own if it's not there. :-)

Yeah, the digital outs aren't of too much use :)

Have you tried using the analog signals for the cable yet?  Should yield much better results!

Models of the 1084 come with either a SCART (Euro) connector, or with a Db9 connector on the back for Analogue RGB.

The 1084-SCART and the Amiga Db23 are shown here:

As can be seen from the SCART Diagram - the BLUE (+ GND), GREEN (+ GND), and RED (+ GND) are the lines to use for Analogue RGB.

On the Amiga side  pins 3, 4, & 5 (+ each' GND) handle this mode. The Audio Lines from the Amiga's RCA-Outs join with the PICTURE cable through the collar on the SCART Plug. With a Db9 (RGB) connector on the 1084, those Audio Lines go to separate (RCA?)Audio Sockets.
(( NOTE- Pins 2 & 6 on the SCART should be labled Right and Left; not Mono! ))
( I've only had 1084 and Philips 8833 Monitors with the SCART input )

I wish SCART had been adopted in the US. Oh welll..

Some of the 1084's also had a round 8 pin din on the back:

Pins:
1: Unused (Status)
2: Red Pin
3: Green Pin
4: Blue Pin
5: Intensity Pin
6: Ground Pin
7: Horizontal Sync Pin
8: Vertical Sync

Mine uses a 6pin din connector.
well I wired up the analogue and it looks sick :)
only problem is the screen shakes whenever the floppy drive is looking for a disk
any thoughts?

I hope you mean sick as in sweet right?  You kids and your hip new words :)

A 6 pin connector huh..haven't seen that one.

Is this the pinout you're using:
Pin 1: Green
Pin 2: Horizontal Sync
Pin 3: Ground
Pin 4: Red
Pin 5: Blue
Pin 6: Vertical Sync

All I can think of is to make sure the Hsync, Vsync, and Ground are connected well.  Do you have the ground on the A1200 to just one pin?  If so, maybe try grounding the A1200 side a little better.   Hope that helps as the only other thing I can think of is getting some serious shielding around the floppy drive--maybe asbestos based :-? :-D
