Tried to get Phished... Good try
« on: July 08, 2006, 11:47:49 PM »
I just got an email from some guy....

"hey man, What's up with that negative feedback you left me? I will let negative too if you don't cancel it. please reply asap"

So I think to myself.  Hmm I have not had any problems and surely did not leave a false negative.  I kindy reply and tell the lad sorry I have not left any negative but let me check.  I log into my ebay and check left feedback.  Nope all Positive.  I get a email back:

"look for yourself.
i am getting nervous. This is the link.

http://www.ebay.com/listing/memb/feedbacks/sonsigns/?dll87443%2213   "

LOL a nice Phishing attempt.

My reply:

"Sorry Phishing is not going to work with me buddy!!!  Move on to the next idiot   :P"

Obviosly he needs to take a HTML class as that was an attempt to redirect me to some phishing site...

LOL

Congratulations. You've just verified that your email address is valid and that someone is reading the mails. Expect more spam.

Never reply phishing or spam emails. Never click 'remove' links. Just delete the mail. If you want to complain, use spamcop.net or similar service to send the report to ISP directly.

Well let them try they will not get anywhere.  Funny thing is the email they used is not used for ebay at all!  So they just ASSUME that I used ebay?  I guess who doesn't today huh...  Oh well.

Well, does it matter if the 15 million of the 20 million email addressed spammed don't? They still get to the 5 million who do. Out of those lets say 5% are stupid enough to click the link without checking. That still gives 250000 hits to the fake site asking you to log in (if you do, you lose your ebay identity to the phishers...)

This is exactly why this scam works: You naturally want to verify if there really is some negative feedback... If you go to ebay.com directly with your browser you're safe. If you click the link in the email... Oops, you're f*cked.

Well I reported it to ebay immediately.  spoof@ebay.com is the address to send them to.  They sent back a reply thanking me and they will look into it asap.  They usually shut down the sites within a few hours...  Damn scammers.

I had a similar attempt recently: I got an email that claimed to be from eBay saying that a complaint had been raised about me because I had not shipped an item. There was a link to an auction and underneath there was another link where I would have had to login to see how to 'resolve' this matter, worded in such a way that I would be helping to refute the buyer's claim.

I don't follow email links. I feel sorry for people who do, and there must be those who get caught out...

If one is tired enough when quickly working through the emails, and has been selling abit on Ebay ... heh. Not one of my better and smarter days. I realized pretty quick what stupidity I'd done when it just redirected me back to Ebay with a login error. Changed passwords immediately so no harm, and never saw a spike in spam on the email account. But now I don't handle Ebay business when I'm that tired! :)
