what version of those archivers would you recommend?

LZX is the most relyable as it was an improvment on LHA. LHA works as well and both are easy to use. DMS is a bit more complicated to use and is mostly used for files that must be on a bootable flopy to work.

no, they must not be on a bootable floppy. it works fine with all floppys that are formated with the standard ffs from the old ofs up to ffs international + dir cache.
as for lzx (my favorite) all versions works fine for me.
with lha i have problems with the 2x versions. 1.9x is fine.

I´ve always used LHA, works fine.
Never used lzx so I have no comment on it.
If you go with DMS I can really recommend using it with DMSui. It´s a gui for DMS.  :-)

I use several version of each. with lha and lzx, I would say use which ever version you have a keyfile for. DMS I can't remember - I'm on the windoze machine right now, I'll have to move to the Amiga and look.... I'll be back asap.

OK, I'm back - I see yet another user has avoided your question.....
I have = LHA v1.42R,  LZX v1.21 (there are '020 and '040  optimised versions too, within this version #)  DMS v1.11 Turbo (what ever that means).
There are newer versions, but I either haven't been able to find the key files for them, or have had problems with the "newer" version.
These version have been working fine for me, for quite some time. I do not know what the tech. differences are between these, and some "newer" versions, but these work.

Yeah LZX gives best result for compression ratio but there are some problems - you may have some difficulties managing the LZX archives on other than Amiga platforms and it's not always faster. On my AmigaOne I use the PPC native version of LHA and it's much faster than the LZX's 68K emulated with petunia version, so it depends how multiplatform you really are.
As for whole disks I used DMS before but some Rob Northen computing protected disk may fail to archive with it, so I started to use TransADF with use zipcode switch (ADZ files), which are more easier to manage on different platforms and the compresion is almost the same.

I think overall LHA is best as its more common and universal

I personally dislike LZX because of having to find ways to decompress it

even on the PC LHA is easier to find and decompress


its like Mods and Meds....Mods are more common and more supported than Meds................same with lha...............even Aminet is like 90% lha files!  that says it all.

As I said, I use the older V1.11 of DMS. There are, indeed, newer (numerically) versions, but I have had some serious problems with higher numbered versions.
I remember reading about "fake" versions but I can't pull that  one from my memory. DMS v1.11 does get the job done.

I use all 3 from time to time on the Amiga and the PC - LZX is my preferred archiver due to its faster decompression and tighter compression,i think the version i use is 1.21.Unpacking LZX on a Windows computer is pretty easy with a File Manager called Total Commander -  h**p://www.ghisler.com/ and a corresponding plugin called LZX 1.1 - h**p://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/lzx.html

There are also other plugins available to explore ADF/DMS archives with Total Commander
