What's the minimum response time for gaming?
« on: June 23, 2006, 10:45:29 AM »
Just wondered if anyone here plays FPS (I'm a massive DoD fan!) with a TFT LCD, and if so what the response time of their monitor was? I'm thinking of getting a TFT now, since my CRT packed up this morning, but am on quite a tight budget so can't afford 3ms/2ms monitors

Cheers
I like Amigas

16-20ms will work reasonably well.

This does depend on the game ofcourse, an FPS needs better refreshrates than say World of Warcraft.  ;-)

I got myself a very cheap laptop, but I did not have any difficulties considering response time. Not even with FPS'es (though I'm not that much of a hardcore gamer). Though colour is sometimes a bit of a problem.

I like FPS games and i have a 12ms 19'LG TFT (i'm a great rail freeze Q3A fan). Is not the same than CRT monitors wich have better response, but 10-12ms i think it's aceptable.

Todays response times are based on no standard anyways, so you cannot really judge a monitor unless you know how they test the responsive times on this said monitor. My 12ms tft is for example faster than most 8ms, because most 8ms monitors are tested just using picture change algorithems that are easiest.

A 12ms monitor can often be no faster than a 24ms monitor that is tested properly.

Something you also need to know, is that great responsive times also often mean less perfomance on other areas. A 8ms monitor usually have more problems with contrast and colour gradiation than a 16ms.

My tip is to test the monitors yourself at the store. Simple test like moving around windows, mouse pointer and such can actually show big differences between monitors.

I am an avid FPS player. Everything from Q3 to D3, painkiller, far cry, etc., etc....
You can NOT tell from the specs! Test the monitor first.

cyberus:

fps games 8ms is quite nice though the better framerate the more dizzy you will get.

for Superfrog , 2ms or else forget about it unless you want to watch something very awfull (like on 20ms its like a 4by4pixel slideshow which makes you feel several feet up in the sky and then falling down 8feet ;-) ..

my 2 cents anyway.
Whats up with all the hate!

Personally, in the past I've found CRTs to be better for Gaming than LCDs, but in recent times with full screen AA and motion-blur effects, both of which smear out harsh colour changes... you don't really notice the difference any more. Modern Games + Modern Graphics Cards look great on modern LCDs :-)
