Accelerator Questions!
« on: June 21, 2006, 11:17:29 PM »
Hey All, I'm continuing  my work on my newly aquired A1200. I'm trying to decide on which accelerator to get. I am looking at either the Viper A1240 or the DCE 1260/50.  I've heard about certain acclerators causing problems with the PCMCIA port, which is something I dont want after I towerize my Amiga.  I'd still like compatibility with some of the older games, and i'd still like decent speed for it when I start to work with Protracker again, and browsing the web. Let me know what you guys think!

I don't know exactly, but i think that PCMCIA problems came with memory expansion cards, not with accel cards, i'm right?

You're not. Many early accelerators had this problem aswell.

The problem is caused by using 24bit address space for the fast memory (upto 8MB). Using more than 4MB memory at 0x200000 will overlap the PCMCIA mapping at 0x600000, shutting down card.resource.

Any accelerator that uses 32bit area (>=0x01000000) for the fast memory doesn't have this problem.

Neither DCE Viper 1240 nor P5/DCE Blizzard 1260 have this problem.

Different problem. Squirrel SCSI is PCMCIA device itself. Due to lame coding the driver takes over the PCMCIA unit until you reboot. You can't unplug the squirrel and use some other PCMCIA device, that is.

Thanks! I will go for the DCE 1260/50. It was my first choice. Time to save up some cash!

With a subject of "Accelerator Questions exclamation point", it sounds like you found an accelerator that gained sentience and started to ponder its own existence.
