the great obstacles
« on: June 21, 2006, 07:01:55 PM »
i decided that there are exactly two big hurdles that keep me from using only amiga os:

- browser with stylesheets support
- java support

are there any other obstacles in the way?

well, at least a great new thread :)

I'd say that the basic obstacles would be the lack of a modern web-browser and an office suite.

Those are a must.

Then there's tons of other, minor obstacles...such as the lack of useful general software.

Just?

Newsflash: It doesn't make it any smaller task. Lots of people have tried to port mozilla for years, and has gotten nowhere (lets be honest here). The port of openoffice has gone as far as getting icons drawn for the app.

In many cases porting requires writing some new code, aswell.

#1 obstacle is cost of Amiga hardware, which seems to be about 10x the price of comparable PC components

Then if I won the lottery and decided to buy up the best Amiga hardware that could be found, I think I'd still be lacking the XVID codec I need for watching Japanese dramas

@AGSzabo : In which planet do you live ?  :)
DV input and its stack : IEE1394 For Digital Video acquisition use (DV Cam, D8, DVHS, DVD-R/RW, FW equipement...).
WM9 HD : HD DVD Codec with DRM for HDTV with HDMi/DVI-d
QT7 HD : Quicktime 7 HD codec
"Motion Compensation Video"  for smooth vidéo playback
Full speed real USB2 and not a pseudo USB1 full speed.
JAVA support
Real Firewall
....

@Damagex : which anim ? Xvid isn't partially supported by Frogger and DvPlayer ?
Keep the Faith !

Those obstacles can be taken if you use a remote-login tool. You can use your amiga for all other tasks. So what if you 'cheat' using a PC ? Just stash it out of sight.

:)

I can see my PC screen in a window on my workbench. That's the beauty of it. I used to run PC-Task but now I'm just using my PC for certain tasks. And if you've got a network too all USB devices can be seen too. :)

Basically a web-editor, using it for daily web browsing is far too slow and missing JavaScript another limiting factor.
