PC to A1200 Link-up
« on: June 20, 2006, 01:08:21 AM »
Hi all,

Need to find out what hardware i will need to link up the PC to the A1200 so that i can transfer ADF files over. And also anyone know what program to use to put that ADF back onto a floppy disk ?
About the hardware needed the only one i know is something called a "null modem" ?.
My set up is as follows... A1200 with Kick 3.0 and WB 3.0 and 85meg HDD (at the moment..being upgraded to 2.1meg in next few days) have also an external floppy. thanks in advance people,
Peace out, Sly294

You're right about needing a 'null modem cable'.  It's basically a serial cable with a few differences that let the miggy and PC communicate properly.  Some stores still sell them with two connectors on each end, a 9 pin and a 25.  That lets you plug the 9 pin plug into your PC, then the 25 into the Amiga on the other end.  That's the cheapest way to do it, however it's rather slow.  You can try a parallel cable, but that is a little more risky - there is some chance of damaging the hardware.  By far the easiest way to do it, is with a wired/wireless network card.  Your 1200 can support 16-bit 5v wired/wireless pcmcia cards as it is now.  The only problem is that it's hard to setup without some sort of connection to the pc already.  So, go with the nullmodem cable for now, it's invaluable for getting important files across, etc.
As far as software goes, my vote is for Cloanto's Amiga Explorer.  Definately user friendly (guides you through the installation process on the Amiga), easy to use, and you can write ADF's to a blank disk from the PC side, just throw in a blank disk in the miggy, then drag the adf file onto the disk icon on the PC.  Easy.  :-)

If you can make your own cable you could do an 8-wire Parallel port cable. These give roughly 4x speed over serial using PC2Amiga. Unfortunately they are not supported using Amiga Explorer :(

I used few posibilities:

Serial transfer software: Amiga Explorer through serial null modem cable. It's easy to make it run, but it's too slow. You can buy Amiga Explorer at Amiga Forever Web site. Another posibility is run NComm at amiga side and another serial comm soft at PC. You can speedup this procedure with 8n1 serial.device replacement

The best solution is use a 16b 5v network card and mount a TCP/IP stack like AmiTCP
